loads for cottontails and fox
« on: December 20, 2006, 07:41:26 AM »
Ok now that winter starts soon, any loads for cottontails and fox using a 36 caliber rifle and patched round balls.
The rifle I’m using will be a CVA Bobcat, 26 inch barrel with primitive sights. Maybe one load for both, since they are prey and hunter, mostly likely in the same habitat. Only round ball can be used in our State Forests and that’s were I’ll most likely hunt.

Thanks

I shot a 40 lb. 'yote with my .36 underhammer, the load was 30 grains of FFFg and a .015 patch. The ball didn't exit, it did however flatten out like a pancake, and stopped under the hide on the opposite side. I'd bet that charge or even less would take care of any fox that ever walked, while not tearin' up too much cottontail to make a meal.  ;)

Thanks, Slamfire I'll give the 30 grains of 3F a try! I got all my 36 caliber stuff together, put fresh balls and patches in the bullet block, loaded some speedloaders with 3F and even hung a 30 grain messure on the block!
Maybe I foresaw an answer before I read this! Now only If we had a little snow!

I suggest using the load you have worked up off sand bags & a bench & know that is the most accurate for that particular rifle & barrel.

I know it shoots good with 45 grains of 3F of 777. It's accurate but hits hard even a 60 yards!

gustmouse.  how do you like your bobcat I just ordered one in 36 cal I wanted that type because of the hooked breech.  makes it much easier to clean.  Do you use black powder or a subsitute.  I use t7 3 f in my 36 revolver and have not had any problems.  I just can't hold it still enough to hit them tree rats.

I use 35 grains of 3f with ticking patched 000 buckshot.
Take head shots on rabbits.
Works good for me.

I like it, small, light, shoots good. All I've shot has been 777, mainly for the easy clean up. I Wanted the .36 caliber for it's heavier shot I mostly use it at the camp in Maine. But want to try it on some fox and rabbit near home this winter. I bought 2 a couple of years ago cheap, but sold one. Nice woods rifle, you should like it. It hits pretty hard with 45 grains of 777. I was pretty surprised the first time I shot it with that load. Now if I can work on a lighter load I'll probably like it even more!
