stocking at distributors?
« on: December 29, 2006, 02:46:44 PM »
So far, Bass Pro, Wal Mart, & Sportsmans have come up empty on a Whelen.  Gander found reference to one going through another store, which is as close as I have come to finding one.  How many barrels/guns do you reckon they made in this caliber?  For a "can't get rid of them" caliber, it is sure hard to find.  After things settle down after the new year, I will try perhaps again, in the meantime the funding may end up going into some other foolishness, either a .44 revolver, Bearcat, or the still in the rack 30-06 with ejector; or a "find" if I go into a hock shop.  Everything is shut down because of the blizzards.  It is no worse than some of you put up with all winter, except this area is not as well prepared for something that happens every 5 to 10 years.

unless i was hunting Alaskan Brown Bear or Grizzlies.............i'd buy the .30-06.    it's got such well-developed projectiles and it's such a great long-range round.    it's also easier on the riflescopes than the Whelen i'd say.    that actually matters to me!  i pull a rifle tightly to my shoulder to help handle recoil and to help prevent scope damage!    it just makes sense to me to protect the 'tool' as well as the shooter where possible.

take care,

Thanks.  I already have a .45-70 (w/12-3.5) and .25-06, & .243.  Partly want the Whelen for being a little different.  30-06 is one of the best calibers ever, especially if you had to limit yourself to a single gun.

Don't feel alone, years ago when they came out with the .308 barrel I searched the world over and had the same results. I called the factory. Apparently, they made only a certain amount of .308 Ultra Hunters to ship, and had such a response for that caliber, they were back ordered up to their ears (or, so they said.) It just might be a tried and ture marketing strategy, make a certain amount of a product, if the public likes it, bust your tail to make a boat load more?
...there are many kinds of wounded, and only one kind of dead. Do it the Handi way, one shot, one kill.

Here is one posted on Gunbroker. Give them a call.

You won't be dissappointed with the Whelen. I've got 2, a Rem 700 and a 7600 and will eventually get one in a Handi to round out my collection. I will probably send my Handi 30/30 in this spring for a new barrel. Both of the Remingtons are very accurate and hit with authority.
