« on: December 12, 2006, 05:19:01 PM »
I'm thinking of buying a 6.8 remington barrel, for my contender ,for my son to use. Does anyone have any experience with this combo?? Is ammo easy to find ?

I've got a 6.8 rem in an AR15 and plan on getting a contender in 6.8 for my daughter.
I reload but factory ammo is easy to get.
also want a 6.8 pistol barrel for me.

I have the 6.8 in the Encore...it has a light recoil. See my recent post "Field Report for the 6.8 SPC". Very effective on whitetail deer and bobcats (and coyotes). I reload my ammo...I suspect factory ammo is more readily available than it was last year. I like the caliber and would recommend it. Good choice.  8)

I have a carbine, it is an accurate light recoiling round.  Only problem I have is the extracter failing to catch the base of the cartrige and having to use a cleaning rod to clear it.  This happens about a third of the time.

I have a 23" barrel on an old style Contender frame, it is a GREAT shooter sub MOA out past 200 yards. Midway has Silver State ammo for it, at first I was doubtfull of Silver State. Boy was I wrong! GREAT stuff! 110 Gr. Sierra pro hunter round nose or Barnes TSX 110 gr. also. I did not get to test this round on whitetails but I am sure it would do fine.

Just found out Silver State Ammo is about a mile from my house. I've been fascinated by the 6.8 but I can't talk myself into buying one. Because for us it doesn't do a dang thing the .30-30 can't do. For the military, they want 600-800 yard hit and knockdown capability so they have an argument for it. Totally ignoring the fact that not one soldier in 20 is good enough to hit a man at that distance. I would bet that everyone of us here, because we love shooting, is a better shot than 95% of the rank and file GIs. Pardon the excursion. When we shoot an animal, we want to be able to place the shot in a killing area AND have enough remaining energy to do the job. For most of us that means 200 yards or less for cartridges like this. The 6.8 has a very small advantage over the .30-30 at 200 yards, but the .30-30 has a small power advantage in being able to use 125 and 150 grain bullets at a slightly higher velocity than the 6.8 can manage with similar weights. And that's why I still have a .30-30 barrel and no 6.8.

I'm a fan of the 6.8.  I have a 6.8 upper on an AR-15.  Having been a soldier I tend to disagree that most hunters/shooters are better shots than the troops are.  Most GI's are hunters/shooter and have been exntensively trained in marksmenship.  Anyway, you'll like the 6.8, it's a good round.

Thank you for disagreeing without being offensive. That is a lost art these days. I am going to get a Rock River .223 so eventually I might end up with the 6.8 barrel. But I'll bet I have a .500 Beowulf or .458 SoCom upper before the 6.8.

If you get the .500 Beowulf or 458 Socom I'll be very jealous!  I'll also be looking forward to hearing a range report about it.  I've heard those kick like a 12ga.
