Tough Hog?

I came across hog no. 10 yesterday,and boy was he tough.I shot him with the 445 supermag and a 265 gr. Hornady at 40 yds. and he dropped at the shot,but the only thing I did different was shoot him through the shoulder sheild.Well the 265 gr. bullet at 2100+ went through the first shield,busted ribs on  both sides and stopped at the other shoulder without entering it. You would think that a bullet that size and that speed would have had complete penatration ( about 14") but it did'nt. The boar weighed about 275 pds. and the shield that it penatrated was 1" thick. The recovered bullet weighed 219.5 grs. and was really flattened.
It tends to make me belive all the story's about recovered bullets from the 22 caliber's caught in the shield  with no damage to the hogs. If the hog that weighed 400 pds. 2 wks. ago had been shot with the 445 it might have been a lost hog because his shield was 2" thick.(he was neck shot with a 30 06)     Digger

been shooting 200 xtps out of my 445 at 2100 f.p.s. the big ten last year at 12 yds hit in the neck and hit the bone and never seen any of that bullet but no exit hole....the 144 # 8 point this year was 75 yards hit in the shoulder but no bone went 20 yards and piled up but no exit it it either......have you tried the 300???jb

All the hogs I've shot with the 445 (4 of them) except 2 of them have made a exit . The other one that did not exit travel through the left hind quarter breaking the leg travelled on through the right front leg breaking it also and stopped just under the skin for a total of 37". It weighed 242 grs. when I weighed it. The 265 gr. bullet was designed for the 444 Marlin,and 2300 fps.so it will hold together. I guess that cartilege in the shield on the shoulder is like rubber,and it takes lots of horsepower to get through it.  Digger

Digger, ya just need a bigger bullet at a bit less speed, a hard cast 405gr at about 1800fps would got thru and thru......but you'd need to rechamber/rebore to .45-70 ta do it!!! But maybe you should try one of BTB's .444 bullets, they have a 405gr in .432"!

Those buggers are tough.

Back when I lived in FL, a few friends and I were out deer hunting when we charged by a really mad boar.  That boar took all 7 of my 170gr 30-30 rounds to the chest and head, plus 2 or 3 20ga slugs, plus at least 1 12ga slug before it stopped.   

That thing slid to a stop within a foot or so of my best friend's feet.  From that day forward those piggies have had my respect in the field.  Sorta like USA's version of the cape buffalo.

The 265 Hornadys are the best bullets we've found for the 445 yet. Traveling at 444 Marlin velocities (almost) they are just as deadly and just as efficient. What Digger did post, and what we like the best about these, is that the bullet weighed 219.5 grains and was fully mushroomed when recovered. Same mushroom pattern on the previous hog and that weight was a whopping 242 gr., that's a 91.5% retention ratio, very impressive. 
I took two deer with mine this season, didn't recover either bullet (didn't even think about it actually) but I'm VERY pleased with this bullet in this gun.    It prints MOA and better every time I take it to the range.

I got 2 more this eve. and neck shot both of them. They dropped in there tracks and I had complete penatration on both.The 445 is filling alot of people's  freezers this fall.    Digger
