Use of scent for coyote hunt
« on: December 08, 2006, 12:31:21 PM »
Hey,
do any of you experienced varmint hunters ever use any scent?  If so what kind?
I hunt from a blind and use scent for deer, why not for varmints.  I would have to think that it would help.

The eye candy (read decoy) will work the best but a little scent never hurt anything. The main one used is the coyote scent itself. Can work great for post hole sets while trapping or if mixed with a little water in a spray bottle you can use it as a cover scent.

I will usually Never Mess with this but pay more attention to clear shooting lanes 90degrees to my right and left. The Coyote is going to circle more often than not despite of how good the injured critter sounds or even looks.
I do keep my clothing outside but sheltered. It becomes seasoned without getting rank via plenty of cold weather.
Good Luck to ya

Scent for varmints? Not sure what you mean by that statement, but I think your talking predators. If you are talking coyotes, scent well not cover the human smell from a coyote period.

I've played with scent for years on downwind coyotes and they can smell you no matter what you do.

The only way is to trick a coyotes nose, you'll never fool it. The one way I know of to do that is to mist the coyote with coyote and rabbit urine. I could go on to explane why it works but it takes to long lol.

Bottom line,  no matter what you use the coyote well smell you, you can take that one to the bank.

Very well said. They will change speed and direction without even breaking stride if they run into your scent trail.  Is best to get setup where you can see well at right angles. Sometimes they will be running as if they are in a hurry to get to your downwind side. If you have an open reed you can sometimes stop them for the shot before they get downwind by barking at them.

got to concer with the others.when you make a set/go in.I have learned to try and walk a straight line and not walk all over the set area.which some folks do.
I have seen coyotes come running in and as they come upon human tracks they with out breaking stride, they put on the after burner and are headed out fast from that area.and if you are using an electronic caller with a remote and just set it out with out putting it in cover,I have seen them spot it and just bark at it like hey folks I found the noise and its not the rabbit.of course if you see them you can get a shot.but thats is not allways the case..

Every one has an opinion, I have used coyote urine and skunk urine on my clothes and shoes, and have had a coyote  hop up on a log I was sitting on  (bear hunting), sit a minute or so , hop off and leave. Have always had real good luck using scent on my clothes and shoes. Not too much luck keeping hunting partners, tho'.  I know I'll get a lot of flak about this, but it works for ME.

You have dumb pups and dumb kittens.  They don't last too long.  If the scent makes you feel better, then by all means use it.  Especially if it helps you sit still.  If you're using the scent to cover up a bad set-up or a "wormy" shooter, then you end up with an educated coyote.
If the drug sniffing dogs can smell a sack of coke suspended in a gas tank, then a coyote can sort your scent out from the others.

I think I've said that before lol.....Not only can a dog smell drugs in a gas tank, bombs in a suitcase, people under 10' of snow,  now they can smell cancer in a human body. Coyotes have even better sniffers then dogs.
You have to take alot of things into consideration when dealing with coyotes. #1 always expect the unexpeced because that is usually what happens.
Some coyotes have never smelled humans before or are young and don't relate human smells  to danger, most coyotes know better then that.
I've called and howled coyotes right to my truck day and night, I've been told they are scared of trucks?
I've called in a coyote and killed it....another one came in the same way and was smelling his buddy, he died too......Then a third one came in and smelled the other two and he died. You'd think they would be smarter then that.
Bottom line, you're never 100% sure what any predator is going to do.

I use scent control detergent, store my clothes in scent free bags, and every trick i can,but Joe is right, what works one day won't the next i called on a set for 35 minutes two weeks ago and finally packed it in left the stand and headed back to the truck [downwind by the way] I had went about 50-60 yrds from my stand and looked up and here he came from downwind in a hard trot.i got hunkered down and got ready just to see what was going to happen when he got about 60-70 yrds from me he stopped and that was as far as he would come.Got lucky and hit him head on,I firmly believe that he would have never came as far as he did had i not been using scent control. just my 2 cents but it made a difference in going home with fur.

They will smell you every time.  I try to have a good open shot downwind of me for at least 300 yards, or open terrain to the nearest obstacle that will "steer" a coyote into me.  Only the dumb ones come in without going down wind and they get thinned out quick.
