We were hunting in the Tortilita mountains, which are about 30 miles north of Tuscon, AZ. Arizona has what they call a HAM license for javelina. HAM stands for Handgun, Archery, or Muzzleloader and one is restricted to those types of arms. Javelina is a great hunt for the handgunner. The pigs do not see very well, although they do have excellent senses of smell and hearing. The hunting technique used is to walk and glass until the pigs, usually in herds, are located. Then you put in a stalk using the terrain and wind to your advantage. The season is in February, there is plenty of public land, the weather is mild, and the pigs are active all day (no need to get up early) - I urge those reading this to give it a try!
