Best worse experience with a deer cartridge barrel
« on: November 11, 2005, 02:43:25 PM »
Ok fellas I'm about to buy my first barrel for my new encore - I ordered a engraved stainless from from the custom shop.

My goal was to order a 7-08 but I have seen a few posts about bad accuracy in the 7-08 chambered barrels.

So - Looking for recommendations - what's the best accuracy encore barrel (that's not a 243 I own a tikka in that) that I can use for deer.

I really would like a light kicker, what's the scope.

Thanks,
Spot

I have a .257 Roberts barrel from the custom shop and it is a tack driver and a light kicker.

I think you should stick with your choice of the 7-08, it is a fine deer cartridge.  :D

the 7mm08 is a good choice, as is the .257 roberts, but i like the 6.5x55 mauser, and the .260rem. they have everything you need and nothing that you dont! they are what i call the perfect deer/hog rounds.
 enjoy your encore!

Any of the above suggestions will work very well for deer, and should be accurate.  I personally haven't seen any accuracy problems with 7mm-08 barrels.  A good friend shoots one in a 15" bareel, and it will shoot 1-1.5" all day.

I have a 308 barrel 24" blue and with 150gr dirty old corelocks I group 1-1/4" at 100yards.  The gun does not kick at all.

I have a 7mm-08.  You probably had read one of my posts about a problem with the accuracy.  Once I realized it was the scope, and put a new scope on it, it's doing pretty good.  I was also not letting the barrel cool long enough between shots, which was causing some vertical stringing.  I'm getting between 1" and 1.5" groups at 100yds, with  140 gr. Winchester Power Point Plus ammo.  I had read that it can take up to 100 rounds to get the barrel "seasoned", well, right now I'm somewhere between 80 and 100 rounds and the more I shoot it, the better the groups get.  All in all I'm pretty pleased.  I'm glad I chose the 7mm-08, and look forward to using it for many years to come.

I ordered the 7-08 barrell today from Midsouthshooters supply.

I also ordered a Talley one piece mount.

In 2 weeks I'll be working uploads, 3 and I'll be hunting KS whitetails.

Thanks  for the reassurance guy's.

Spot, you made a good decision, I would've recommended you stay with the 7MM-08 or go to the 260.  I have the 260 and love it but a friend of mine has a 7MM-08 and has killed more wild hogs with it than I care to admit.  Both are real game getters.

Good choice on the 7-08.

Here's a post from me a while back:

I'm up to 4-out-of-10 on my "tack hunting" at 100 yards now.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

I used my new Bullberry .308 Win barrel (24") for the first time this deer season in NY.  Got lucky on opening day and made a one shot kill frontal shot at around 75 yards on a massive 12 pointer from my treestand.   Net green score was 152-1/8.   172lbs dressed.
