contender rifle barrels
« on: December 21, 2006, 01:45:43 PM »
Looking to get a rifle barrel for my contender, what would be a good caliber. Most shots would be under 200 yds for deer. I have a 10 inch 30-30 barrel that i already reload for and was thanking that a 20 inch barrel would be nice since i have dies, bullets, etc. for it. Is the 6.8spc,7-30 walters,or any of the JDJ calibers better. I really like the 250 savage but i think there is only one company that makes a barrel for that caliber.

I don't think there is much that could be better than the 30-30 for what you describe (I'm biased-- I have a G2 carbine in 30-30).  If you wanted something different, though, I would go with the 7-30, or maybe 6.5 JDJ.  They'll all fill the freezer.

Regards and happy holidays,

Mike

I second the vote for a 7-30.  In a carbine I think that would be a fantastic setup.  However, common sense says, stick with the 30-30; especially since you are already loading for it.

I'll tell you my experience of buying a rifle barrel that was the same caliber of a handgun that I already had.

I had a .223 14" super barrel for my Contender. I had a nice setup including a Leupold EER handgun scope on it. So, about a year later I bot a factory T\C 223 rifle barrel and put a Leupold scope on it.

Well, the 14" shot excellent out to 200 yards as long as I did my part. But...the rifle barrel shoots excellent out to 400 yards, as long as I do my part.

So, as time went by the handgun barrel never got put back on the frame. The rifle barrel just got too easy to use and I was whackin every groundhog that got lined up in the crosshairs.

So, last year I sold the 223 super 14" barrel......and this month I'm getting a 14" 7-30 Waters. Hey, I got a real nice EER scope that's been doin nuthin for quite some time now.

So, what I'm sayin is if your going to get another barrel, get a different caliber 'cause you'll use it more. If you get the same caliber you may just end up prefering one barrel over the other, and one will just collect dust.

Dave.

Man, I've got a carbine in 30/30 Win. also and love it!

But, go with the 7-30, reload using the same 30/30 brass, right?
