Contender forearm screws
« on: December 29, 2006, 04:18:06 AM »
I know this has been discussed in the past but I guess I am "search" challenged cuz I cannot get the feature to work.  Anyway, I just bought a Contender (7-30 waters) used.  After getting it home I realized that there was no front screw in the forearm.  I have gone to both of the local hardware stored and one did have the right treaded screw but with an allen head that will not fit into the hole.  I really do not want to drill the hole in the forearm bigger - would rather keep it original.

Any ideas?  My next e-mail will be to Thompson.

Did you check with your local gunsmith?  Most smiths carry a few screws for folks that lose them.

The screws are 10/32. I purchased a box of Socket Head Cap Screws from the local machine shop who had them for me in less than a week. They are blued allen screws. I bought long ones and grind them to fit.

You'll find most hardware store screws are too big in diameter to fit in the hole.

I used my wood lathe with a drill chuck and a file to make one smaller one time when I couldn't find one.  You could probably also do it in a drill press.

If it's too long, you may have to grind or cut it off.

I eventually got factory screws.

There is always Brownells. If your in a big hurry just have 'em overnight it. Yeah, it will cost more.....but better to have the right screw than to screw the barrell up.

Dave.

Davemuzz,

to my knowledge, Brownells does not carry T/C parts.

However, there is a guy on Ebay selling some forend screws.  I bought some from him as I had some forends missing screws.

I lucked out.  Was looking thru my junk drawer and found an extra  Encore forend from my muzzleloader.  the screws were taped into the holes and so I took the  front one out . . . perfect.  Now I have to get another screw but for the synthetic forend.  Dont mind drilling out that hole.

Davemuzz,

one of those screws might work,, if the head diameter is 0.289 inches or so.  Most hardware store screws (and all I could find from industrial suppliers) listed a nominal diameter of 0.315 or so.  So they don't work.  Why T/C didn't set it up for a common screw beats me.
