Which barrel for 445 super mag
« on: December 27, 2006, 12:22:59 AM »
Looking at getting another barrel for my 445.  right now it has the 4" compensated.  I would be using it for deer, possibly elk.  I was just wondering from you 445 shooters which barrel would you recommend.  I'm between the 6" and 8" barrels.  I would like to get the 8", but I'm worried it will make the gun alittle front heavy and affect my accuracy offhand.  The 6" would be lighter, but not have the sight radius, as I like to shoot open sights.  A bit of advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I don't know if it is still available but I use a 10"  standard wieght shroud that is slotted.  There are slots milled into the side of the shroud to reduce weight.  The total weight of the gun w/ this set up in just under 4lb. empty.

IMO the 8 " bll is best I have a  375 SM and 414 SM both with  6,8,10" blls, the 8" gets the most workout.I also like the longer sight radius of the 8" bll,the 10" is a little too much of a good thing especialy with a scope on.l

I have a 10"VH with a scope, 8", and a 6" with the comp, and the 10" is the only one that ever sees any use. This is one of those no answer is wrong questions. Get the barrels you think you want and try them, you will use the one you like best.

The great part of the Dan Wesson story is that you can have both.  ;D   If you are looking primarily at short range shots at moving targets, I would suggest the 6" barrel.  The sight radius will not be as critical as long range shots.  If you are looking more to shots out to 100 yards and farther, go with the 8" or even the 10" barrel.  The sight radius will help long range accuracy considerably and the extra barrel length will give a considerable increase in velocity.  I would go with the slotted 10" standard (not heavy) contour unless you are a small person who simply is at the upper limit using an 8" barrel because they are not strong enough to hold the 10".  I have an 8" slotted, standard (not heavy) barrel that I would swap for a 10" in any contour any day of the week.  The 10" is no more cumberson to carry, I can handle the 10" as easy as the 8", and the 10" has the afore mentioned sight and ballistic superiority.  Longer range shots allow use of shooting sticks or an improvised daypack kind of rest which make the extra 2" easy to handle.

Does CZ-DW company still sell the slotted barrel shrouds or is this something I really have search for???  I think I'm really looking at the 8" barrel.  Seems that might be the ticket for the 445.  Only have the $$$$ for one right now.  I'm just trying to avoid getting a really fwd heavy barrel like I had for my T/C contender.  I had a super 14 w/scope on it and it was bit too much barrel.  Not so much the weight as the balance of the gun I'm looking at.  I'm a big guy at 6'3" 285, but I like a pistol I can shoot comfortably.
