Loads for 7mm08 and 243
« on: January 03, 2007, 04:19:36 PM »
Hello all does anyone here hand load the 7mm 08 or 243? If so what are your favorite powder/bullet combinations. Any advice would be greatly appreciate. Thanks, Charlie

I find the 7-08 pretty easy to load for.  I've tried several different powders but keep coming back to H4895.  H414 is pretty good too.  I've read that some folks get good results with Varget but I have always been able to find a powder that did a better job.  Whichever bullet in the 139-145gr range that gave you your best accuracy is the one I'd pick. I like 140gr Rem Core Lokt bullets as a general thing and if I want a little twinge of extra self confidence, I switch over to Nosler Partitions.  Also in 140gr.
I don't try to motor my rifles too hard.  A 140gr bullet started at a middle to high 2700fps or low 2800fps will kill a deer very dead.

I have 3, a model 7, a Rem classic, and a custom based on a 700 action.

My Ruger Tang Safety .243 loves 100 grain Nosler Partitions with 41.5 grains of IMR 4350 with a muzzle velocity (chronographed) of 2872 fps, in the 70 grain pellets it likes 40 grains of IMR 4064 with a muzzle velocity of 3256 fps.

For my .243, mine likes 3 combinations so far ...

60gr Sierra HP/Varget
70gr Nosler BT/Varget or H-380
80gr Nosler BT/H-380

I am now starting to develop a load with the 85gr Sierra HPBT.
