i saw on t.v some people hunting elephants. the man said a 500g 450 was good at slowing down one. Can you use a 50BMG to hunt them?they have hard bone in there heads that you can't shoot into.

A 50 BMG would be fine but it cannot be a Semi Auto. Remember too you will be walking tracks for many log days to catch up to a herd. I'm not sure you would pack around a 25 pound rifle very long. I'm not sure an average guy will withstand the recoil of a 50bmg built on a light bolt action rifle either.
The old reliable round of a 500 grain bullet at 2100 fps has been getting the job done for a 100 years now. It can be built on a rifle like mine at 9.3 pounds. My 458 Lott shoots a 500 grain bullet at 2300fps, with hidious recoil! I much prefer the 450 grain bullet at 2250fps. It will zip clean through just about any living thing you hit at any angle with a tungsten solid.

I only use Model 70 CRF rifles

I have only three. A 30/06 my primary hunting rifle

My 375HH for the bigger species

My 458 Lott which is only a lttle bit of a Model 70 as it stands now. The barrel is a PacNor, the stock is custom made laminated walnut, and action was machined and fitted to the whole package to work with the Lott case and feed perfectly. Still a Model 70 foundation but after that all hand made by an excellent local GunSmith/ craftsman

How hard is it to change a 458 win model 70 into a lott??
Just curious of your reasons of a lott over a win mag.. Do you feel the 458 win maf is just not enough??? I love the lott i thinks its what winchester should have had to start with!

The Win Mag with the powder used today is a fine round with maximum loads and 500 grain bullets. The problem is that maximum loads in really hot weather don't mix. The Lott can handle the same powder charge with far less pressure so it's much more heat tolerant.

That makes stuck cases unlikely. Not much worse then a stuck case in a DG rifle!

What happpens if a person takes a hot load in these types of conditions.. Say for instance hornadys Heavy magnum.. What can happen if you use this round on a say 100-109 degree day?
