Opinions please new Coyote rifle for son
« on: December 31, 2006, 01:39:58 PM »
I am ready to buy a predator rifle set up for my youngest son (21). My personal rifle is a Savage 10FP in .223 with a Millet Buck Gold 4-12 scope. After several hunts I now know that for Brice I want a lighter standard barrel rifle. He is partial to a Tikka T3 so I'm thinking Synthetic stock, blued barrel T3 in 22-250 with either a Burris FFII 3-9 or a Sightron SII 3-9. What do you all think of that set-up for calling Coyotes at night? Any opinions would be appreciated.

NOPE...the coyotes don't like those....they cost too much.  Kinda like catfishing from a yacht  ::)

Saiga 7.62x39 (or 308)....BSA Cateye scope with illuminated reticle...and a cheap spotlight that mounts on your scope will do the job everytime.

Seriously though, it doesn't matter how good your rifle is, if you can't see the yote at night.  If you plan on hunting during the day, it's a SLIGHTLY different story, but not much.

Savage 12 BVSS would be my choice during the daylight hours...when folks can see what you're hunting with   ;)

The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

My Savage is a pretty decent looking rig now. I got a nice Olive Drab and Black Bell and Carlson stock and a Harris Bi-Pod for Christmas. If I knew how to post a picture I would put one on here for you all to see. Anyway the rifle for my son will be USED extensively hunting at night. I just ordered an Optronics scope light for my .223 and will probably put the same on his 22-250. I'm thinking synthetic/blued so the 'yotes don't see the rifle. I am interested in anyone experience with either the Full Field II or the Sightron SII scopes. My Millet works just fine, but I want a clearer scope for Brice. Thanks for the help.

I have a Savage 10FP with a B&C Desert Tan stock and Bushnell Elite 4200 scope that looks pretty decent too. This is my most accurate setup. I do not use this as a woods rifle as it is just too heavy for me to carry where we coyote hunt. I use a .243 Ruger all weather with a Sightron II 4-16x42mm scope. I like the Sightron line as I have 2 scopes and a pair of binos. I keep the scope set at 4x or 6x when I am hunting in the wooded hills around here.

As for as scopes, I have always believed everyone who looks down a scope, sees something different. I would take your son to a gunshop, you pick out 3 to 5 quality brand scopes in the price range you are looking in, and then let him chose what looks best to him. I did this with my son and it worked out great. He chose a scope that I would not have but it worked for him and he loves the idea he got to pick it out. I know he got a good quality scope because I did the first step in the selection process.

I think your idea on a Tikka rifle is a good one. My next rifle will be a Tikka T3 ss in 7mm-08. I handled a T3 Varmint rifle yesterday in 22-250 in a gunshop and they are slick. With a heavy barrel, I would not choose this model for a carry rifle but the action was very smooth and the stock was more than acceptable. A T3 lite should be perfect for him.

Good luck to you and your son.....
