Can this be safe? Sabot,Sabot and then Bullet
« on: January 06, 2007, 08:59:39 PM »
I was looking at sites and Noticed on this site http://www.bpbullets.com/ to the right of the page there is a Pic of a Duplex-12 per Blister Pack...

Can one safely load a .45 caliber sabot jacket into a .50 caliber sabot and a small Bullet in the .45 caliber sabot sleeve?

Or am I to new to Muzzle loading to understand this concept?

If it's done safely I would like to do that sort of shooting in the summer on woodchucks with a much smaller bullet in a .45 caliber sabot, and them load them into a .50 caliber sabot jacket for my Omega.... Smaller Bullet diameter bullet and less weight say like a 180 grain bullet is what I would like to try out if safe....

So Please fill me in on the correctness of that Picture and concept of bullet...

Thanks alot

In my standard Encore M/L,  that is the bullet and sabot set up I use. I use a 195 gr. .357 duplex sabot.  It is a .357 bullet in a 45 caliber sabot that fits in a 50 caliber sabot. My accuracy is 1 inch at 100 yards with 90 gr of loose triple 7. I have kill about 7 or 8 deer with that set up. All one shot kills.

What you see in the picture is correct.

The picture you show is the only factory-available two-sabot setup, and is a to shoot a .357 bullet in a .50 gun.  In a .45 gun, you'll just shoot the .357 bullet in one sabot.  There are no ML bullets available that I am aware of smaller than .357, and certainly no sabots for them.  Centerfire rifle bullets will be too long to stabilize in your rifling anyways, you'd have to use pistol bullets which wouldn't fly flatter than available ML bullets even if they are lighter because they are less aerodynamic.

I am aware of at least one guy who machines his own .45 sabots from PVC that go from .45 to .308, and shoots centerfire .308 bullets.  Of course, this is in a Savage smokeless ML with a custom fast-twist barrel.

The one in the pic is safe, The ones I made at home needed some more work. They hit the paper at 100 but found the inner sabot at the target. Had the a 35cal hole in the bottom of it. Slid up the bullet and rode it to the target. I quit - - - - - - around on the spot.

That duplex sabot you see in the pic is a custom design/fit. Yes they work very well. They provide the best b.c. from 100-300 yards of any muzzleloader bullet made.

But it does not guarantee that they will will shoot the best in your ML. You need to try them first. I recommend the 195 gr. in 357/50 for your first choice.
Keep that ML smokin'

Okay all, See I was gettin this idea that it's okay with all sabots to Double them and use smaller rounds... I think I will stick with what will work and Not to fancy.....
Slave, I seen a barrel today at the gun shot that Made me  get goose bumps... one barrel end was flowered wide open...right at the front sight....

other barrel was one a gun reloaded 1 steel ball in instead of some bird shot.. and it tore open the Bottom center channel of that barrel from the forearm forword to the tip of barrel...They BOTH learned... as the steel ball barrel was Loaded By the Gun shop owner when he was a Teen and didn't understand the danger of testing out something NEW....

So I don't plan to Mess around to much with the muzzle loaders, Just use commen scents and take my time to learn before I take the chance.. as we are all given one chance at some idea's.......

Take care and god bless all, Be safe ,be careful and keep the shooting fun...
