480 Ruger
« on: January 04, 2007, 07:17:29 AM »
Has anybody had any luck shooting 325-400g WFN LBT hardcast slugs at low velocity, ie: 800-1000fps.? How accurate?
Looks like a harcast of this size, along with a meplat that wide, 900fps or so should be all thats required.
Do these "lighter" weight slugs need to be driven near max to stabilize?

shot alot of 360 wfns out of a 475 and didnt have much luck at lower velocitys. Groups usually were cut in half between shooting them at 900 and shooting them at 1200 at 25 yards and the spread was larger at longer ranges. thats only one gun but kind of mirrors my experinces with wfns in about every caliber.

If you don't mind me asking, what powder were you using?

to push it to 900 the best powders would be unique, power pistol, universal clays or 231 and out of all of these id have to say that i have my best luck in big cases like the .475 and .500 with unique. Another good one if you want to step up to 1000-1100 fps is hs6.

285gr KTGC with WC680 or AA1680 27.0gr gets 900 FPS and shoots .75" at 50 yds with a Leupold 2x in my SRH 480-7.5 " bll
305gr KTGC some load shoots just as good.
I use surplus WC680-(same as AA1680) for reduced loads, fills the case so there is less chance of overcharge.

400gr cast -LIL Gun-16.0gr for 1000 fps
400gr cast-H110- 19.0-1090 fps
