Savage 219 rebuild
« on: December 24, 2006, 12:40:34 AM »
Hi all, Recently bought an unloved early 219 .30 WCF ( Utica address) with a badly pitted bore and cracked stock.Bought her cuz she's one of the fastest, best handling rifles I've ever put to shoulder.I'm extremely impressed with the design and construction of the rifle and would like to put her back in trim and get her in the woods where she belongs. She locks up like a bank vault and shows very little wear internally so I believe she's worth the effort. I'm thinking rebore to .35- 30/30 or .38-55 or perhaps cutting off the original barrel and boring out the stub and fitting a new barrel to it. .30 WCF would be perfect of course but I'm also thinking a .25-35 WCF would make a sweet stalking rifle. Thoughts and ideas apperciated( gunsmith recommendations  as well). Its too bad that nothing like this exists on the market today.Have had Handi's and T/C's and liked them but this little Savage is in a class by herself. They'd sell like cheap gas! Thanks for the help. Merry Christmas!    Deo Vindice

Just my 2 cents some of yhe old 30-30 shot pretty good with pited bores.
But the thing might be to reline it, if you want 30-30 or 25-35.
I had 1 NEF reamed to 25-35 recently I have always like 25-35.
 Good luck, Merry Christmas Marv.

PS I don't know any thing about you spoke of.

The bore on this one is REALLY bad.A crying shame as the finish on the internal parts is nearly 100%. My goal is a complete rebuild with some fancy wood as well. She's one of those rifles that just speaks to you. Know what I mean? Havent had a rifle pique my curiosity and give me the custom itch like this one. As far as the 25-35 goes , what are good deer bullets other than the 117 Hornady rn's? I think a good 100 grain spire point would be fine so long as they expand at 25-35 velocities.

I not sure Wayne York at Oregan gunsmith can reline that with a 25-35,
That way you could outside origtnal. His Addy , and phone is in the top
of handi center fire forums above here He is real nice mab to talk to on phone.
Does good work, He has done alot  of work for on Nef/H&R's I know
the one he dpd for is great. I amusing 90 grain bullet kick speed up to approx
2600 f/s. I know the factory 117 will do the job if the pillis placed right.

I have done this with sucess.  The man who did mine just retired.  Basicly, I had the barrel relined to 25 caliber and rechambered.  Cost about $250.00 about 8 years ago.  Problem is the trigger and there just isn't much you can do about it.  It is a shotgun trigger and you are stuck.  You just have to learn to shoot with it.  Weaver makes scope bases and the project is straight forward.  I would recommend staying with the 117 gr bullets for deer and keep the range short (100 yds or so).  Maximum loads are less accurate.  Find a load that is accurate and comfortable.  The 117s loose velocity fast and the lighter bullets can not be loaded hot enough to make up the difference.  75 gr HP shot extremely well for varmints and target work.  I also had a 20 ga shotgun barrel that I had fitted with chokes for bird hunting.  Sold it a couple of years ago.  Nice outfit.  Good luck  2520

I have a minty 219 in 30-30 that I would like to convert to 25-35.

It has a broken firing pin, and I have to fix that before I can test fire it as a 30-30.

The scope mount looks like a 3/8" dovetail for rimfire tip off rings.

I will drill and tap the 30-30 barrel for some Weaver mounts.
