H&R-NEA Pistol barrel question.
« on: January 04, 2007, 12:24:00 PM »
I was wondering with the .44mag or the new .45LC barrel, can you load these rounds hotter than pistol specs? Not anything terribly hot.
With my .45LC Blackhawk I have a load around 1100fps. Just wondering if these rifles can take the pressure.
Also, the new .45LC, I can't find it as a 'barrel only' option. If not, will it be avaliable anytime soon?

In the words of Gomer Pyle, Thank ye, thank ye, thank ye!

The 45 Colt BC rifle isn't even availalble yet, won't be for at least another month, accessory barrels will be along this spring or summer if they follow past practice. The SB2 frame is good for the pressure of the .500S&W at well over 50kpsi, so the little colt even in +P will be fine.

Thanks very much.
I'm kind of torn. I have always loved the .45LC and have reloaded for it for years now. I also like the .44mag and I reload for it too.
What would be your pros and cons of each caliber. I would use this gun for nothing bigger than whitetail, no distance past 100yards. Mostly a 'fun' gun. I think the .44 may be a more accurate round from 75 to 100yrds.  I will use only the iron sights.
What are your thoughts. Thanks for any help.

The 44mag in a Handi has a bad reputation for having oversize bores, couple that with the slow 1:38" twist and it's not real appealing for accuracy. Those that shoot .432" cast bullets can get em to shoot, but jacketed is another story. There's a little light at the end of the tunnel tho, one member bought one recently that slugged at .430" so maybe they're getting a handle on it. Hope so, cuz the .444 Marlin Handi will be available in a month or two, it sure would be nice if it was a .429" bore and 1:20" twist like it's Marlin cousin!!

6Shooter, no one here has any idea of how the .45 LC will shoot or what it will be bored, there is some speculation but nothing firm yet. We all know the .44 Mag has been a tremendous disappointment UNLESS you handload with larger diameter bullets than the factory uses, and even then there may be some problems. The overbored .44 Mag has been a problem H&R/NEF (Marlin) refuses to face and even discuss let alone admit exists. They just keep pumping out the overbored barrels without correctly the error. Instead of .429 they should measure I have read many mike out at .432. I will admit I do not have one and it is by choice, why buy something the factory makes incorrectly and then you must reload for and may or MAY NOT be able to get to shoot well. Some do and some don't, it's a crap shoot at best. I would like to see H&R make a .45 ACP barrel and /or a .41 Mag barrel (with the correct bore diameter!!) instead of the overbored and sloppy .432 .44 Mag barrels, or make a simple phone call to the barrel maker/supplier and have the bore size of the .44 Mag barrels corrected....<><.... :(

Bottom Line:  DO NOT get a .44 Mag until the problem is corrected by the company, if you want one call the company or the parent company Marlin and ask them when they will be fixing the error and when they will be making the proper bore diameter barrel for the .44 Mag....If we ALL called it might happen... ;D

I thank you both. I didn't know the problems with the .44
 I may just go for a 45/70

Now there is a smart decision, you will not find one H&R 45/70 shooter that has any complaints about that caliber gun, unless they complain about only having 1, then they all want another, myself included. My 22" Handi 45-70 is a beauty that can really do it all, I want another however, a Buff Classic of course!!!....<><.... ;D

The only constructive criticism I have for the 45/70 is the reloading components are expensive unless you cast your own bullets which I suppose most who shoot this caliber for fun do.
I'm going to write the company to try and find out what the bore/chamber diameter is for the .44mags.
 thanks for your help.

My 45-70 is a lot more accurate than my 44 Mag Handi, which is the worst of my Handi rifles.

This is OT, but still a little relevant....per customer service, the 444 Marlin will have a 1:38 twist.
