i voted 7mm08 because i bought one for my son and when sighting in loved the caliber, i hunt on eastern shore of md and alot of folks are starting to use it, my aquaintance owns a large gunshop and he and all his friends choose them over anything in the store, enough for me, i got the youth model sb2y08 and the short stock is sweet in a stand with hunting clothes on

You need a 3rd option for the vote.....BOTH!!! I've hunted with a .308 almost exclusively since 1983, except when I hunted with a muzzleloader a few years, killed lots of deer and elk with the 308, you certainly can't go wrong choosing it, but OTOH, the 7mm-08 is an excellent caliber too, I have a Handi in both calibers now, but have not shot either one, but the reason I got the 7mm-08 was because so many folks love them, never read a discouraging word of value about it!! ;) Pick one and get it, then get the other, no wrong choice there at all if deer are the game of choice, if elk were in the mix, I'd lean toward the .308, but wouldn't exclude the 7mm-08 even then.

My vote is for the .308 for several reasons. even though the 7 mm is a good round we as a Nation tend to lean to wards the .30 cal. if you handload there is a greater variety of projectiles for IT. I like cast bullets and for me .30 cal is about the bottom line as far as what's available for it. When you go for less than .30 cal the choices narrow quite a bit. I can also pick up mil surp rounds pretty cheap just for plinking.

As Quicktodo said neither one would be a wrong choice.

In a Handi for these 2 calibers..I opted for the 7-08..It just a personal preference of the 2...In truth..if I was only going to utilize either rifle for 25-110 yards shots...out of a deer stand on whitetails..I would probably go with either a 223 if legal in your state as it is in mine or a 30-30... If any jump shooting is likely..then I would have to change it a bit and say either a 30-30 or 45-70...both loaded with Nosler partitions...I would use the partition for the 223 for my deer hunting of any kind of stand...Like I said...just a personal preference... ;)

Although not a handi, my daughter has a 7-08 in a Rem 700.  She absolutely loves it.  So far, its record is gun
2-deer 0, using only 2 bullets.

I have a 7-08 and have found off the shelf ammo for 308 more plentiful and affordable.

Forgot to add that I reload only, and do have everything for 308 and nothing in way of 7-08.Mac gotcha on the personal preference,we all have them don't we.Quick,I did think of adding a 3rd choice of both, and somehow knew you would be first one with that!I've also heard nothing both praise for either one,and have 35yrs using the 308.Took my 223 handi for a walk one day, ended up in deerstand, after seeing just how nice it was on it,thought I may get one just to use from it.Thats one reason to buy one,at least thats my story and I'm sticken to it.

I voted 308, but I'd like to have both.
