can I use a standard large rife primer if the load data calls for magnum large rifle primer? second is it safe to substitute a 20gr. lighter weight bullet for a given load. in case it is relevent the powder is imr 4895 in a .375 h&h with sierra 250gr.

tree rat,
The primer substitution is never a clear yes or no, there are lots of "it depends". I would not recommend it offhand.
The 20 grain lighter bullet over a powder charge listed for a heavier bullet is probably okay. A suggestion, try Googling on the bullet make/weight for reloading data and see if you can get direct powder charge data.

Winchester large rifle primers are labeled for 'standard or magnum ' loads. If your box of primers says specifically that it is for 'standard' loads and you reloading manual says to use 'magnum' primers, then I would get some magnum primers. It depends on the burn rate of your powder.
