anybody use the old win. silver tips?

i was cleaning out my reloading bench and found several hundred of the old, aluminum tipped winchester bullets. they are .308, 150gr. i just picked up a rem 760 in 30'06 and was planning on loading some light loads for hunting. i remember hearing good and bad about these bullets. anyone have any comments? they are sort of flat tiped, can i use them in my 30-30? thanks!

When I could get them I loaded them into the 30-30.  One of the most accurate bullets I thought.  Ran them out about 2100 out of a single shot and it was venison, bisquits, grits and gravy on time everytime...

I have an RPM Hunter in .358 Win., and shot a couple of Texas Whitetails last year with the W/W factory load 200 gr. Silvertip.  Neither bullet penetrated all the way through either deer.  The insides of the 6 point were mushed, but it was like the bullets just exploded.  I have used the ST in other calibers (30/30; 30/06/.348), but from this experience I would have to say that the ST bullets are tougher in some calibers than others.

I like the 140 grain bullet in the .270 Winchester.  I purchased a thousand of the aluminum tipped 140 grain Sivertip, boattail bullets when they were discontinued.  They have to be the finest old style Silvertip produced.  On the scale every one that I have put it wieghts 140 grains.  And they shoot 3/8's inch groups at 100 yards from a rest.  They were produced at a high standard.

I have seen good results with other factory loaded Sivertips, from the 270, 30-30, 32 Special, 303 Savage, 300 Savage, and 30-06.  Oops almost forgot the 30-40 Krag.  Dad's buddy made a Texas Heart Shot with the 30-40 on a buck and the bullet exited up front.   I beleive the bullet was a 180 grain Silvertip. All my experience has been on deer.

Clearly the deer are afraid of them.  I have never seen a buck when my rifle has been loaded with the 140 grain bullet.

I sure wish I would have known there were 140 grain silvertips available for the 270 Winchester years ago.  I purchased some of the last 130 grain silvertips.  They shoot O.K. but are not the greatest accuracy in my Model 70.  This rifle definitely favors the 140 grain bullets over any other weight.  I presently shoot the 140 Hornady SPBT and it extremely accurate—not too fast—but accurate.  A day late and a $ short…BCB

I found my rifle liked the Hornady 140SPBT, and it works great on deer.  That is why I purchased the 140 Silvertips around $5 per hundred.  Fifty-Fifty hindsight tells me that it was a good deal.
