.223 handloads
« on: January 05, 2007, 10:10:06 AM »
Any advice on good handloads for a .223 ultra varmint?  I'm sure this question has been asked before, but since I can't search for the post I'll have to ask again.

My .223 Handi bull barrel likes 50gr Nosler BT ... Win brass ... 400 CCI primers ... 26gr of Varget powder (this is MAX load) ... 2.261" OAL. Do not start out at 26.0gr of Varget but as usual, work your way up to it. I have shot 5 consecutive 3 shot groups with all groups measuring between .600" and .750." However, I did shoot a .248" 3 shot group one other time with this load. I have tried 55gr Nosler and Vmax's but not with as much consistency in groups.

thanks.  I'll start with that or something close.  I forgot to mention that I have the new barrel with the 1/9 twist.  I'm not sure how much difference that makes.

My Lee manual has the max for varget at 27.0gr and on the Varget bottle it has a 27.5gr Max for 55gr fmj.
I use 26.5 which works great and will not make the Mil spec brass stick in my chamber.

My ultra shoots under 1 inch with the 50grn Nosler CT Ballistic Silvertip over 25.5 grns of IMR3031 . Winchester brass and CCI magnum primer.
My rifle has a 1 in 12 twist barrel.

Sierra 52 or 53 gr MatchKing bullets
22 grs of H4198 (DO NOT exceed)
 CCI450 or Federal 205 primers
Though only 2950 fps, will group nicely in anything from 1-7 to 1-12" twist

The 26gr max load I gave for Varget and the 50 gr Nosler BT came from Nosler's 5th Edition manual. All manuals are different and sometimes quite a bit of difference in my opinion. That is the best reason I have for owning the 5 manuals I have and referring to all of them when starting a new load.

The best load for accuracy and velocity that I have found  is 27.5 grains of Varget behind a 50 grain Hornady Spire Point.  28 grains is max and it is almost impossible to get that powder charge in the case without a drop tube.  It clocks just over 3200 fps from my rifle.
