Primer for 44 mag loads
« on: January 06, 2007, 03:45:41 AM »
I am a bit new to 44 rem mag reloading although I have loaded for 260 and 223 for a few years.  I decided to use the Federal large magnum pistol primers for my full power hunting loads with 24 grs of H110 under 240 gr Horandy XTPs.  I am working up mild target loads using Rainier 240 gr plated bullets and 8 gr of Unique.  I am trying to get between 900 to 1000 fps.  Are the Federal mag primers good for these mild practice loads?  Does it matter?

I am shooting a Ruger SRH with a 9 1/2" barrel with open sights.

any standard primer will work. I use mostly federals because they work better in DA guns so thats what i stock the most of.

I would advise you to test all brands that you have access to and use the ones you get the best accuracy with? Guns are all different beings. Several years back an author by the name of Bob Milleck (handloading editor for Shootig Times magazine), did some extensive work with primers and his conclusions were quite astounding and surprising? There certainly is a great deal of difference between the many brands.
