Ultra Varmint Rifle
« on: January 11, 2007, 02:42:33 AM »
I wanted to clear something up with some guys that know what they are
talking about. I'm very interested in the H&R/NEF Ultra Varmint (the lam. wood stock, not the fluted varmint) in .243 Win with the 24" heavy barrel, but
was told last night by the "knowlegdeable" staff at my local BPS that
the company no longer makes a .243 with a heavy barrel. On the
website, it is stock number SB2-843.  I'm mainly looking for a coyote gun with the occasional deer hunt thrown in.

Anyone know if there is any truth to what the salesman said at BPS?
Does anyone own one of these, and what do you think of it?

Thanks a bunch,
Jason

It's listed in the 2007 catalog on page 22 with the rest of the Ultras, I think maybe the BPS folks aren't as knowledgeable as you thought!! It's also listed on their web site which they recently updated.

I've got one, it shoots Federal 95gr Fusion and 100gr Power-Shoks inside an inch at 100yds, sometime into half that on my good days!!

Tim,

What scope is that?  I'm looking at a Bushnell Banner in either 4-12x40 or 6-18x50.   Opinion either way?

Price difference is about $30, so it's not that big a deal.

Also, is the 24" bull barrel in .243 on the Ultra going to give me that much more accuracy or range over the 22" bull barrel found on the Handi in .243?  Or am I paying the xtra $50 for the upgraded wood?   I could care less about what wood it has on it, i just want a shooter.   I'm looking at a Handi with the 4-12x at about $290 vs. the Ultra with the 6-18x for $360.  Or some combination of the two for somewhere in the middle.

If only all the choices in my life were like this one.......decisions, decisions.......      ;D

It's a Mueller Sport Dot 4-16x50IGR, can't help ya with the high power Banners, all of mine are low power variables, 3-9x and below, but they seem to be very popular, haven't seen anyone complain about em here, in the Optics forum, or at RFC. ;)

If you want a shooter, the resin laminated stocks are the most accurate of all their stocks IMO, every one of mine are very accurate.
