Should I jump on this deal?
« on: April 22, 2003, 04:59:43 AM »
I've been looking for a backwoods gun for hiking and camping. I have been looking at S&W 629 4", S&W 686 in .357, and even GLock 33, but I was in a pawn shop yesterday and saw a Glock 20 with a 15 rd mag ( no case, extras mags, just the G20 by itself). They're asking $350. It's in excellent condition. 3 questions: (1) My gut feeling is I should jump on this thing like bees on honey. Am I right? (2) Can the 10 mm be loaded to match .357 mag ballistics? (3) Will the G20 handle the higher pressures?

Litefoot, the G20 is a steal at that price!! Grab it. The 10mm can be downloaded to match 357 Mag ballistics, if you so desire. According to the new Glock Annual for 2003, the Winchester 41 Mag 175 gr SilverTip has 1210 fps and 610 ft/lbs of energy, while the 10mm 175 gr SilverTip has 1250 fps and 650 ft/lbs of energy. A very potent load, to say the least. There is more powerful ammo out there too.    As for the recoil myth of the 10mm, it is just that, a myth. The G20 shoots very nicely with the 10mm load. It's not uncomfortable at all. The G20 is designed to handle the 10mm with no problems. The only addition that I've made to my G20 is a 22 lb recoil spring and stainless steel guide rod. I did this for my own peace of mind. Once you try the 10mm, you won't look back. MI VHNTR

Well, I picked up the Glock and took it home and broke it down for cleaning and to my surprise, it looks to me like the thing had NEVER been fired.  The pawn shop gave me a good deal because they said  "A 10mm is hard to sell, we just need to move it out". Okay, I'll take that!

Litefoot, congrats on the 10mm. Head to this site:
http://www.glocktalk.com  You'll find a section devoted to the 10mm Glocks called The 10 Ring, and some great information on the ammunition to feed them. MI VHNTR

Thanks for the link MI VHNTR. I actually already went there to GlockTalk to research the G20 before I purchased. Lots of good info and lots of passionate feelings about the 10mm especially the G20. The 10 Ring crowd seems to be a little more along the lines of the folks here. I mean, hunters and reloaders and the sort. Some of the other groups seems to be full of pre-pubescent kids too young and irresponsible to be wielding handguns. Anyway, the G20 is a little large for what I had intended, but when there's a deal to be had...well, it'll do just fine and I might just get some hunting in with it.

The 155 grain XTP bullet can be loaded to over 1300fps and expands VERY WELL at these speeds. I think you will like the 10mm.
