does anyone know of an on-line source where i cna look up the full version of the NRA Rifle silhouette rules?? specificly those pertaining to the reqirements for the Highpower "hunter class" (or whatever it's called).

I am thinking about getting into this sport, but want to get as much information as possible BEFORE i lay out any cash. and yes i HAVE visited a match already adn in fact will be goign to observe another this comming weekend.

if someone could provide a link i would be very greatful.

I am not aware of an online copy of the rules. But you can order a copy of the book from the NRA.

I'm kinda new to this game so I did a bit of surfing and came up with the following bag of IMSSU rules. Sorry but don't know how to do the webby link thing. There seems to be little tid bits here and there in various gun club sights.

My Question is in regards to HP hunting rifles with only a 3 rd mag. I understand you have to load your magazine up to 5 rds or full capacity. When you need to reload to take the final two shots, do you have to drop and reload the mag. with the additional two rds or can you just load by hand into an open breech?

the rules seem to read as, "load to full capacity, fire all, place remaining needed rounds into the magazine, fire reaminging shots".

sounds like non-removable mags or removables easily loaded while in place would have an advantage. instead of having to drop the mag and reload it while it's off the rifle.

Regarding the Hunter rules.. the international rules are a bit different from the NRA rules. weight and factory requreiments probably being the most significant. The NRA rules have been modified recently to make the whole process pretty easy. For both HP and SB the rifle has to "look" like a rifle you might go hunting with. a broad definition... it has to have a tapered barrel no longer than 26" it has to have a 2lb trigger. for HP the rifle can weigh 9lb or less, for SB the maximum rifle weight is 8.5 lb. after those requirements, the sky is the limit. no more "factory" requirements regarding caliber, barrel length, and barrel contour. if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and poops like a duck, then it is a duck.

regarding the loading thing... you must load your first magazine or your blind magazine to capacity. for a blind magazine, after you have shot your rounds you then have to load back into the magazine before chambering your rounds. the easy answer for the box magazine is to have two of them if they are 3 round magazines... load both, when one is empty, drop it and insert the second. easier answer is to shoot a Sako TRG, 5 round magazine that chambers like silk.

one of the more ridiculous and inconsistent rules which wasn't changed in the last hoorah is the rule that states you can not load your HP box magazines until the "ready" is given. Doesn't apply to smallbore. they can be preloaded when you come to the line. don't ask why, it will just piss you off. it is just the way the rules are... for now anyway...

so far i've pretty much decided on the rifle i want to use. but i don't really know what i should be looking for in a scope......

I know that the local match director uses a BSA Platinum target scope, and that target turrets so that the scope can be adjusted without having to remove the adjustment covers is a great plus.

but what of power, need of Adjustable Obj, utility of various reticule types??

i just get lost!

any help is as always apprecated

Thinking of buying a Tikka stainless/synthetic in 6.5 x 55 for hunter class. I happen to know where there's one gathering dust in a shop nearby. I can probably get a deal since not to many hunters are interested in buying fullsized rifles in non-super dooper magnums theses days. The only turn off is the 3 round magazine and some of the plastic parts. Can't find a negative word about that rifle anywhere. A second magazine is pricey. About hundred bucks Canadian ( whats that now in U.S. dollars, about 5 bucks :wink: )

All ready have a B & L 6 X 24 scope.

Tikka's are a nice rifle, 6.5 x 55 is a very nice caliber. Good combination.

i cut and pasted a previous post regarding scopes...

Scope:
Leupold: most popular, most expensive, questionable tracking, good clarity and brightness
Bushnell: less popular, much less expensive, good tracking, wonderful clarity and brightness. they are abit heavy.
Sightron: less popular, much less expensive, excellent tracking, mediocre clarity and brightness, a couple of ounces heavier than the Leupold.
Weaver: less popular but there are top ranked shooters using it, good tracking, good clarity, less expensive.

fixed vs. variable...
better brightness and clarity with fixed scopes. usually weigh less as well. less flexibility regarding magnification
