Garmin’s MapSource and Google Earth Scouting tools
« on: January 23, 2007, 08:34:27 PM »

I have been playing around and appreciating both Google Earth and Garmin’s MapSource US Topo and City Navigator North America mapping software on my computer.  The nice thing about this interface with the Garmin software and Google Earth is that you get an aerial photo view of your waypoint.

To take advantage of these tools you must have Garmin MapSource software on your computer, and you must have Google Earth loaded on your computer.  I have the free version of Google Earth.  I have the latest update, which is a noticeable improvement.  You must be connected to the internet, and you need to create a waypoint on the MapSource product at the location to want to scout.  After creating the waypoint go to VIEW in the toolbar and click on it.  Select Google Earth and it will load and take you to the location you created your waypoint at.

I see it as a good scouting tool.  The view I was looking at this evening showed the contrast in vegetation because the pictures must have been taken in the fall.  I will create waypoints on my gps for some of those locations for bird and deer hunting.

When you look at a location using Google Earth be sure a rotate it around so that you get a feel for the vegetation and the slope conditions.  If you do not rotate the view your brain will think you are looking at flat ground.  I thought it was neat to look at a location where I had shot a buck.

Google Earth was not an option for us when we were on slow dialup, but now that we are on cable Internet it works great.  This evening when I tried to load the update of Google Earth I encountered problems.  I resolved the problems by going to Control, Add and Remove programs, and removing Google Earth.  I then went for the free download at   http://earth.google.com/

WOW!
Thanks again, you are a wealth of info.
I just used it, it showed my route, but not my waypoints.
I have some other little program downloaded that shows all geocaches in google too.
Set up a couple deerstand waypoints, and a drive route, all by Topo map the other day.
was able to see them in google now.
The stand waypoints did not show up, but the route did!
Thanks again,
Jim

I have found that if you do one waypoint at a time it will show up.  I would like to get more but have not successful.  I need to play with it.  I sent the google earth link to a hunting partner this afternoon.  He loves it and will try print the photos on waterproof paper.

I am including a copy of a photo from Google Earth that I obtained using the MapSource-Google Earth connection.  It is degraded some because I had to resize it to import it to this site.  Note this is the free version of Google Earth.

Now if they can just come up with a way to imoprt photos into the unit!
Wouldn't it be great to have the photo rather than a map in spots!

" Exclusive satellite images and aerial photographyOurs is the world's first and only handheld GPS that downloads, displays and georeferences satellite images and aerial photography for navigation. Bushnell GPS is the only handheld system that supports satellite and aerial photography. Download an image from our Web site and it's instantly calibrated (georeferenced) to the satellites for navigation. This exclusive, revolutionary technology opens up a whole new dimension of opportunities for the outdoors enthusiast. The expedition starts in your armchair"

It looks like Bushnell has developed the gps that downloads the images.  I have not had my hands on a Bushnell gps so my limited knowledge is based on the Bushnell WebPages.

Graybeard sponsor MidSouth shooters supply lists the unit.  It appears that you pay extra for any photo after the first four.
