Taurus 4410

Guys,

There is the Taurus 4410 and the gun called the thunder 5.  They both shoot .45 LC and .410 shot gun shells.  What are your thoughts on using one of these for either self defense or for field carry.

I'll talk to you..I have a .45 LC/ .410 T/C barrel.  As far as  self-defense I don't have much faith in the .410 (great for snakes), but the 45 side of things is a known man stopper.  I would think at  self defense ranges (7 ft. or closer) the revolver would work just fine.

I looked at one on Friday, it was the 2 1/2"? barreled version, it looks like it has some potential as a woods gun.  The others I had seen were the long version.  I would have been more interested in the revolver had it been stainless.  I don't think I would look at it as self defense gun but as a woods gun it has potential if it proves to be reliable and accurate, I have some concerns about the accuracy due to the long oversized cylinder.

That is a good point, Thanks.  It would probably be just as much a field gun as anything, so what would be acceptable accuracy?

For me anything greater than 2 1/2" or 3" at 25 yards would be unacceptable.  I don't really see this as a hunting gun or a true personal protection gun, I would see it as a gun to carry when woods loafing, berry picking etc. when you really didn't expect to shoot anything but wanted to have a firearm for snakes, feral dogs, or in a worst case scenario people.  Don't get my post wrong, the revolver loaded with 45 Colt ammo would do the job on a person, I just think there are better choices as an intended self defense handgun.  I  usually carry my Ruger single six as my woods gun if I am in a relatively "secure" area.  In more questionable areas I carry my Glock 22.  Before someone says you should carry a long gun if you expect trouble, in the areas where I carry the Glock, I am not expecting trouble but you never know.  I just don't go into the areas where I expect trouble when I am in the woods for fun, I get enough of that when I am working so I don't want to deal with the head aches when I am recreating.  I probably wouldn't buy the Taurus simply because I am satisfied with my Ruger and while the performance of the 410 on snakes would be better than 22 shotshells, they have worked fine for me on many occassions.  If you get one, let us know how it works out for you, it is a neat revolver.

I was interested in their 45 LC, but when they switched to the 410/45 I lost interest due to the long cylinder.

I have always liked the idea of the 45/410 but they dont do either one well so its kinda an iffy subject for me.  I think maybe a combo cylinder with a half dedicated 45 cylinders and half 410 would work a little better at satisfying both sides and make it more accurate with 45 which would apeal to more shooters. I dont really know but am having fun with "what ifs" . I do have a 6" 45/410 derringer that a good snake gun but thats about it the sights are lame so shot shells only for it, very nicely made though.
