Slugs for Pardner
« on: January 11, 2007, 02:33:58 PM »
I used the remainder of the Winchester slugs that i had and put a box (wish i bought more today) of Brennke KO 's . I've read post that this one or that one shot better , well my Pardner likes the brennke's a lot , at 50 yds 4 shots in a 5in group with just the bead  impressed the heck outta me, (an awfull lot of luck  i am sure) ;)    i think i found the slug when one is needed, and the sweet thing is the local dicks sporting has them on sale for a$1.97, so i will be stocking up on these bad boys............. :)

What choke do you have in the pardner?  Im curious as I just ordered a pardner in a 12 gauge so I can shoot slugs, buck and shot.  Ive seen posts all over this forum about what you can and can't shoot.... ;D

The Brenneke's are great, they are accurate and really hit like a sledgehammer. You got a great price on them, I have to check a Dick's next time I get by one, congratulations. These smoothbore Handi's are the best deer harvesting guns made for the money if you are shooting within 75 yards or so. If you get a chance send your gun in and get either a 12 or 20 gauge Tracker I barrel with rifle sights while they still have some left, they are only a little over $50 plus fitting and shipping, and I'll bet they shoot almost as well as those crappy overbored .44 barrels they keep trying to sell to us....<><.... :)

I love the brennekes and stocked up last time Dicks had them on sale for 1.83.

The best I was able to do with a bead was 3.5" at 50 yds.  Definitely accurate enough for an offhand shot.

I was able to get these results with an ic and a mod screw in chokes.  There really wasnt much difference.

well done lotus, that translates into about a 5" group at 75 yards and a 7" group at 100 yards, smoothbore, a shotgun bead sight, offhand, $1.83 a box of 5, whats not to like, and the gun is light and handy to carry. Imagine if you had real iron sights, or a red dot, or a scope! To tell you the truth though, I would not argue with your success, congratulations!!!....<><.... :)

MSP  mine is as you said a smoothbore 3" mod choke  right off the shelf.  i am very pleased after being away from the sport for so many years   to come back to h&r/nef. the pardner is such a neet little shotgun. oh yeah the slipon recoil pad makes such big difference, my next project( i think ) are the studs for a sling  . Is there any trick to installing other a small pilot hole for the screws ? anyone who has done this  themselves how far back from front of forestock should stud go ? I dont want  to take chance of cracking the wood .... :)

longjohn, which do you have an older schnabel style forearm or the newer straighter one? If you can wait a fw hours I will check the measurements and post them for you, both on the forearm and on the buttstock, at least where the factory puts them. Besides not wanting to split the wood you want to get them on square to the centerline of the stock and not cocked sideways, be sure you drill the pilot hole straight from both directions and a right angles to the wood at the location of the hole so when the stud bottoms up against the stock it all looks square....<><.... :)

I found out years ago that no matter where you put the sling stud on a single barrel forearm it will sooner or later catch the web of your hand during firing and that hurts.I mount mine at about a 45 degree angle on the very front edge of the forearm. They are out of the way of your hand at that point and it really looks good.In 30 years I've never had one split on me from putting them in this location.

Yes, the schnabel style is the one with the curve in the front. A friend of mine who did not want a sling stub where he grabbed the gun on the forearm mounted his front sling stud in the small flat area on the front of the schnabel style forearm he has, that way it never contacts his hand, I thought it would not be strong enough but it has been that way for about 3 years now and continues to work well for him, of course I do not see him sling his gun very often....<><.... :)

LongJohn, does your buddies 20 gauge USH have sling studs? If so check those measurements, that is what you need ..let us know if his has sling studs on it....<><.... ;)

hey thanks msp. not to drag this on ,however yesterday my buddy and his grandson were trying to sight in the scope on hi gs 20ush and un fortunatley the scope rail and scope had issues, good thing is gs lives across the road from local sports shop /range own by gunsmith. a few quicks turns here and there and Mr Dave had fixed right up, now to the meat of the question when using the bench rest ( this thing is like the pros use, not they are any better shots ;D) gs had to take the lugs off to get ush to lay right in the trough to sight  , I am wondering if  i would also have a problem  with grip , i am tall and have long arms ( i know this a lot of  personel choice) bt have you ever used a barrel type sling for the front,as it could be ajusted to length, , itho i it would have to be really slim  not to stick up above bead, i remember reading  that somone was asking about these, any help would be awesome.....lj

longjohn, here is what I would suggest for you, an Uncle Mikes Barrel band sling swivel stud, just mike your barrel in the area you want to place the clamp on sling stud and order the appropriate set. If you don't have a micrometer let me know what gauge barrel and how far in front of the forearm you want the front sling located and I will mike one of my barrels and let you know which to order. The price is great and you get a nice set of swivels with it. I suggest about 1 to 4 inches in front of the forearm....<><.... ;D

My 20 gauge seems to like the Remington Sluggers.  I finally found some more in stock.  If it's not raining in the morning I'll go back to the range and get it sighted in.  I also have the Uncle Mike's Barrel Sling Swivel on it.  The rifle sights were put on with J.B. Weld and it seems to be holding up good.

Ironwood, are those the standard H&R sights you have on that 20ga??  JB weld??  What method did you use to line them up straight and true to the bore?  That rig looks real nice.  Wouldnt mind puttin sights on my 12ga, 22", Mod. barrel.  Do you think the JB would work for a Peep sight on the receiver?

Cookieman,  Since I didn't have anything better to work with... my eye and scotch tape.  To my great surprise the sights didn't really need much adjustment.  I shot 3 at 25 yards and two of those were just a little larger than the bullet diameter but low.  I couldn't get the elevation screw loose, but I had to try it at 50 yards anyway and thats the two shots in the photo.  The sights were just some I had lying around here.  I think maybe from a 788 Remington.  They really weren't a real snug fit but very close.  Now that I've solved the elevation problem I'm going back to the ranger tomorrow if it isn't pouring down rain.

I don't know how well or how long the J.B. Weld will last.  After a two day cure time I did tap on the sights with a small hammer and they didn't move.  I guess only time will tell.

The best idea I could come up with...Scribe a mark on the top of the receiver, using the firing pin as an index, then latch the barrel and use that mark and the Bead to index a straight line down the top of the barrel.   Did you need to use JB to fill between the contour of the sight base and the barrel or did it match up pretty well?

Cookieman that's almost exactly what I did.  The rear sight did move slightly but there's enough adjustment on the rear sight to make up for the movement.  The rear sight conture was almost a perfect match, but the front had a very small gap.  I really was only wanting to see how the little gun would group with rifle sights.  I don't think I would be taking it on a bear hunt! :)

Hey, as long as the sights stay on until AFTER ya shoot the bear, it would do the job. ;D ;D  Well, after seeing how well yours turned out, I may just have to give it a try.  Thanks for the advice and pic, too.  Looks great.

Ironwood, forgot to ask, which slugs do you get the 1/2 oz or the 5/8 oz.

Cookieman, I'm sorry I'm so late replying.  I am shooting 5/8 oz slugs.  I have to admit the little gun didn't group so well when I went back to the range.  I should say that it was windy and I was rushed.  That's never good for shooting tight groups.   I'll go back again when the weather clears up and give it another try.  Icy roads have prevented me from making the hunt this week.   :'(
