I "inherited" my Dad's pre-64 model 70 this week. Soon's I get a set of dies I'm gonna load up some Partitions for it. What's your thoughts--130 grain or 150??

It will all depend upon what you want to hit with it, and how much penetration you will need.

Whitetails at 100 to 200 yards across a winter wheat field is what I have in mind. I know the 130 pill will do the job--I use a 120 in my .25/06 (see avatar at left). Just curious about the experience of others with the .270...

Don't have any exrerience with the partitions but i do know the 130gr. Sierra game kings kill whitetails on the spot.

I have been reloading for the .270 for at least 13 years. (time flies)
I started out using the 130 gr. Partitions, they were awsome. I later swithed to the 130 gr. Ballistic Tip. They work just as well and are cheaper than the Partition. Acuracy is exceptional with both. My Uncle and Cousin have been using the same BT longer than I, and have yet to switch.
I took a nice 205 lb. 6 point last year at 150yds. He got up out of the soybeans and was loaping over the beans. One shot when he started on the downstroke, above the shoulder and just below the spine fipped him and he never moved from where he fell. This bullet does fine on deer if you do your part. 150 lb. class deer in the vitals also pose no problems.
I've never used 150 gr. bullets. I find my rifles like IMR-4831 better than IMR-4350 but both are good choices. It all boils down to what your rifle likes best.

Why not split the difference?

I use the Sierra 140 grain bullet with 53.1 grains of IMR-4350 and Winchester WLR primer. Measures 2944 FPs @ 15' from muzzle.

A load that shows some promise (but one that I haven't settled on yet) is the same Sierra bullet and RL-22 fom 49.9 grains to 60.0 grains on top of Wnchester WLR pimer.

That load of ricciardelli's with the 140 grain and AA4350 is the same one I have been using in a Remington Model 700 ADL. The only mule deer I shot with it droped on the spot, just about a hundred yard shot, and was dead by the time I got over to him.

You can't go wrong with 130 Partitions, but like Stan M says above, you can't go wrong with the ballistic tips either. Frankly for deer, seems that just about any decent 130 grain softpoint is gonna kill any whitetail with ease.
I think Jack Oconner was right, there's just something magical about the way a 130 stops deer when used in the 270. I'd save the 150s for the bigger brutes.

Since the 1960's I've used 60 grains of H-4831 with the 130 grain Nosler Partition. Several years ago I switched to 60 grains of RL-22. I've had no complaints.

i use 150 gr. nosler ballistic tips exclusively. every deer shot (from 40yds to 210) flipped over backwards and never twitched afterwards. these deer ranged from totally relaxed to all out hauling @$$ for the next county. awesome cartridge. my all time favorite. :!:

I use the 130 gr ballistic tip and 60 gr of Accurate Arms 3100. Shoots great in my model 70 featherweight. None of the deer shot with it have lived long enough to complain either.

Thanks, guys, for your input. It's amazing how much wisdom and experience can be had on this forum. Think I'll start with some 130 Speer PSPs I'd forgotten I had. If they behave on paper, I'll go from there.

Funny how some rifles are picky and some ain't. I'm still working on loads for a .243 in a 98 mauser that so far doesn't care for anything but 95 grain Partitions. My old 25/06 will shoot anything from 87 to 120 grains to the same POI all day. I guess its all part of the fun....

130 gr. Rem. core-locks. at Midway for about 100 bucks a thousand. It is a very good bullet too. Quite a few deer and a few bear too with no problems at all.

17 rounds of reloads 43.0 gr H4895 with the Remington 130 gr CL bullet
20 rounds of reloads 59.5 gr H4831 with the Remington 130 gr CL bullet
