45 colt load for feral hogs
« on: January 14, 2007, 02:26:42 PM »
I am going to be hunting feral hogs with my 5.5" 45 colt redhawk.  I want to use a expanding bullet and am thinking of using the 250 grain XTP @ 1200 fps.  Any one use this bullet on hogs?

I haven't used the load you are talking about but I have killed several with the 230 grain Federal Hydra-shok out of a 45 a.c.p. with good results so your load should be big medicine if you get good shot placement

You may want to consider a XTP Mag bullet for hogs, the jacket is thicker. But my honest opinion is go with a good cast bullet for good penetration.

I have used that exact load on deer and they work great. It will probably work fine on hogs, but I prefer a heavier Hard Cast load , as Redhawk 1 suggested. My current Hog load is a 325 WLN over 25 grs. of H-110. This load runs 1200 fps. over the chronograph. (1200 fps. seems to work good on all of my loads as far as killing power). The bullets are from Montana Bullet Works in case you want to try some. :)

John R., I use the 300 gr. hard cast gas check bullets from Montana Bullet Works. He makes some great cast bullets.

Should be enough ,I watched a show two weeks ago a man was killing hogs with a new model Gamo .177 pellet gun.One shot kills in the head. The shots were about 25 30 yards .The pellets in this gun were going 1600 fps.

So I guess the new Gamo .177 pellet gun is the new best thing.  ::)

I'm with Redhawk.  I've shot them with XTP's and wasn't pleased with them.  It's hard to beat a cast bullet with a good sized meplat.  I've used 300 grainers and 255.  Either works fine, but have settled on a 255.  Largest I've taken was a 255 "barr" at 90 paces.  In one side ond out the other with a Lee, 255 RNFP.  Bullet left the muzzle at slightly over 1,500 f/s  from my Trapper.

I've killed quite a few hogs with 22lr and 22mag but not with a pellet rifle.  ;D For your 45 colt load try a 300gr lfn lbt bullet with 13gr HS6. Regards, Byron

There is a great article in latest issue (Jan or Feb 07) in shooting Times Magazine.  I did not know that the .45 Colt could be so accurate and powerfull.

Brian T,
Assuming good bullet placement, your 250 XTP will work fine on hogs @ 1200 fps.; 2400 will get you there nicely.
