Accuracy for Winchester M-100 .308win and Mod 94 .30-30
« on: December 27, 2006, 04:52:37 PM »
My uncle loaned me a Winchester M-100 auto loader in .308 and a Win 94 in .30-30.  So I can go chase whitetails next week.

The 100 has a 2.5-8 Weaver on it.  I have no idea how old this rifle is.  My guess is 30-40 years old as it belonged to my grandfather.  Same with the Win 94.

The 94 has open sights.

Should I expect sub 2" groups with the M100?

Going to the range tomarrow to try things out.  Let ya know how it goes.

Update after trip to the range.

M-100 in .308 Weaver 2.5-8x scope--> 150 gr. Remington Corelokt factory ammo. --> 1st three shots, one ragged hole at 50 yds. (2" low, 2" right), moved to 100 yds, 3 shots inside 1"(2 touching) made adjustments to zero at 1.5" high at 100 yds... 3 shots covered by a quarter @ 100 yds.  I'M A HAPPY PUPPY.

pre '64  M94 .30-30 open sights--> 150 gr Remington Corelokt Roundnoses --> 3 shots into 4" at 50 yds, struggled to keep it on paper at 100 yds(my fault, never shot more than a .22 LR with open sights and never farther than 50 yds.... It will make a good pig gun up close, but I don't feel comfortable past 50 yds.  I may use it to work on my stalking skills! I do have to say it kicked like a mule!!! by far the .308 was much smoother.

I may have to see if my uncle will sell me the .308w.  He did say he wanted to trade it for a .243w for his youngest boy.   I'll have to get a different scope.  The one on it holds zero ok, but it is the ancient type weaver mount that the adjustments for zero move the scope, not the reticle.  It'll do for now.

All said and done, I'm a happy puppy, at least I get to go hunting!

I have a Model 94 3030 that was bought new 50 years ago. It banged around in a patrol car for 20 years, and served me well on several man hunts I was asked to participate in along the Red river back in the 70s. I was a bit of a tracker in my younger days. I can still hit a gallon milk jug filled with water at 270 yards consistantly. It has a Lyman receiver sight and the front sight I replaced long ago with a post. The 150 grain soft points I shoot are real gentlemen on the shoulder end of shootin. No offense, but my guess is the accuracy problem ain't the rifle.

haha... yeah, I agree Dee.... the accuracy issue has little to do with the gun....  Like I said, I'm not used to open sights on anything more than a .22...  It has the original sights on it.  I'd like to put a peep style sight on it as I'm sure that would work great, but it's not my gun.  Loaner.

I have a Win Model 100 in 308 and it will shoot 1 to 1 1/2 groups all day. I am selling as I don't use it but they can be very accurate

Just an update....

My wife shot her first deer with that old M-100 last week! If I can get the camera to cooperate, I'll post a picture!

Congradulations to your wife, and sympathy to you. Now she is into hunting and won't believe any more of your lies about why you need certain stuff that you really don't need, but just want. Now she'll know better. ;D
