I have done it, add a size medium slip on Sims recoil pad, remove the shell holder from the buttstock and then remove the 3 little rubber pieces of rubber that are held in by 2 screws to hold the .410 shells by friction (otherwise the drilling destroys them), drill out (ream really, not much to remove) the holes for the shells with a 31/64's drill bit so 45/70 will fit in (a 1/2" drill bit may also work), replace the rubberr pieces and reassemble and you are good to go with the lightest and handiest 45/70 buttstock available. I would not not plan on using it at the range for to many shots but as a carry gun and for shots on game you will never remember any recoil. And the good part is it still works for .410 shells!!!. You could also do it without the slip on recoil pad but, ouch!!!....<><.... ;D

No easy way I can think of, that's one reason why I added the slip on recoil pad, the other being the LOP being a bit short and the shape and style of the back end of the survivor stock dies not seem to be ideally suited to soak up recoil either. However in a situation where you were shooting your survivor stocked 45/70 lightweight woods carry gun at the biggest buck you have ever seen in your lifetime I'll put my money down that you never remember the recoil....<><.... ;D

think about it, going light and convienent is why we are thinking of using this stock in the first place...
so why add weight?
