Recoil Pads and 7400's

I think I read something one time about the Remington 7400's not functioning reliably if you installed a recoil pad?

Did any of the Remington centerfire auto's (pre-750's) come from the factory with a recoil pad?

The new model 750 comes with a pad but they also mention that the gas system has been improved.

So what do you think about a 7400 and recoil pads?
Would you buy a used one that someone had added a pad to?

My 7400 synthetic came with a regular Remington 3/4" or 1" (not sure) rubber recoil pad on it.  The wood stocks have the plastic buttplate, but I don't see where the addition of a recoil pad would cause any functioning issues.  I've got a Bell and Carlson Carbelite stock on my rifle now, and it's got a rubber recoil pad on it, about an inch thick too.  No problems at all.  I'd buy one that had a pad fitted to it, if the price was right.

All the synthetic stocked 7400's come with a recoil pad so this should be a non-issue...

Think of it this way too.

If you are shooting a rifle with a plastic/metal butt plate when dressed in heavy clothing with a heavy jacket/coat on in the colder weather, your clothing actually acts much like a recoil pad.  A recoil pad should not interfer with rifle function/cycling.
