Tire chains and Redneck Bragging Rights
« on: December 07, 2006, 06:48:44 AM »
Recently we had a 15 inch snowfall on top of ice.  I put tire chains on my 1991 Ford F-150 in 2WD and drove all over town without any problems.  At times the bumper was plowing snow but I never got stuck.  I did not even have any extra weight in the back - just a full tank of gas and two spare tires.   It is amazing how effective tire chains can be.   Even if you own a 4WD, tire chains will make a heck of a difference.   A snow shovel is a great idea as well - just in case you push your luck too far.  It is cheap insurance for when the weather gets nasty.

I got some tire chains a number of years ago when my wife got our 2wd stuck. After I put the chains on I walked right out, I was able to move 5 ft or so to get them on. I still carry them at times and occasionaly use them on my 4wd truck. I had a good spot to cut firewood last summer but had to deal with a greasy sloping sideways hill. The only way I was able to get up was to chain up the front tires. I think I would rather drive a 2wd with chains in the woods than your average 4wd. I also use Bridgstone 'Winter Duellers' on the rear of my 4wd in the winter.

we used chains for years out here before 4wd became popular. i used to carry a med sized floor jack in the back so i coul;d jack up the rear tires and install the chains no matter how stuck i was.the trick is to put on the chains before yu get stuck.deep mud or snow and steep inclines is where 4wd will shine ove chains tho.

I carry a full double set for my 4x4. One time I put them on my 74 F250 and delivered fuel oil to some folks who ran out while the 3 day snow storm still raged. I plowed drifted snow so deep it went over the hood so heavy it stopped the windsheild wipers.
