.260 ?
« on: January 18, 2007, 03:49:39 PM »
Guys I know this is a HR/NEF site but I ran across a heck of a deal and need advice.  I guy at work offered my his sons gun at a very good price its a ruger 77 II compact with a 16.5'' barrel it has less than a box of shells shot thru it.  His son is grown up and this gun is in new condition not a scratch on it.  Sells for 550.00 has a prostaff nikon 3x9 150.00  he wants 450.00 for all.  Now for why I need your help.  I new it wasn't a popular cal.  but before I told him yes I went by a gun shop to see how hard it would be to get shells they didnt have any, went to another and they didnt have any.  Came home checked cabelas and bass pro they only show them in a fed prem 140.  Seems shells are very hard to come by.  Do you think this cal will make it? Dont want to have to hand load. I was going to get a handi combo for my daughter until this came about. Deal or No Deal?

Well it is hard to say for sure. It is a great round, but we have seen great rounds go down the tubes before. There are signs that we may see some new interest. Target & Tactical shooters are using it more & more. More than a few are screwing off a 308 tube and installing a 260. Up to 500 yards they are tit for tat, but @ 600 and beyond the 260 pulls ahead as the range increases. It is true that these type of shooters are a minority, but 1 Tar/tact guy will shoot more rounds in a year than 20 average Deer hunters. This translates to more bullets, ammo & brass being offered. Nosler is also now offering brass & Black Hills will be offering a match round very soon. I believe other ammo will follow. Alot of these guys hunt too & their use of the round long term will mean more hunters doing the same, or it usually does. I am looking at a HB bolt gun in this soon.

So to me it is pivoting from a no to a go, I believe, but it is not etched in stone.

BTW, Conley has some.      www.cpcartridge.com

i'd agree with Mac. The .260 is a great caliber for your usage. I am considering picking one up for my fiance. That deal should give you the impetus to start reloading.

I have a standard Ruger 77 in 260, really enjoy it, no problems finding ammo for it. Sounds like a great buy to me!
