cast and throat lead
« on: January 10, 2007, 06:52:33 AM »
Hey Veral. Got a ruger #1 thats been rechambered 450 alaskan. As you may be aware the alaskan is virtually throatless with a neck making cast bullet selection tough. The thing shoots copper like the wind but we gotta get away from ucky ol copper. I got a throating reamer here that PTG made me that is .460 with a .5 degree taper to rifling. So being only .5 degrees it takes it like 5/8" to go from .460 to .449 rifling land dia. I know cast are suppossed to start gently but is this not to much of a distance for it to be trying to pick up less than full depth rifling ? Is there a chance of stripping? PS .I likes my speed

You like your speed, so my answer is directed so you can get all that's possible.

Order the bullet weight you want from LBT, in .460 diameter on the body but ask to have the nose diameter cut to match your groove diameter.

Seat this bullet so the lube is covered, then throat out till it will chamber easily.   If the bullet is a gas checked style and is wearing LBT lubricant, you can burn all the powder the case will hold and get delightful accuracy.

Well then that mold your makin me, or maybe already have should be just great as all your molds are Veral. Its Doug here from ontario canada,(The speed freak) I just wanted to post here so all folk would have access to the info, but you know. I have told you before the bullets I've popped out of your molds have been in numerous guns to take game big and small in lots of places. I ordered straight .460 from ya, so I'll just make up a little ring size die to pop the nose down a hair...All the powder the case can hold, now you know your getting me excited  ;)

I hope you visit here quickly Doug, as your mold is on its way.  You left a phone message asking me to email you but I've lost your address.   Hopefully the mail moves fast enough here to Canada that you can be getting kicked around by end of this week!
