6.8 SPC
« on: January 23, 2007, 03:46:00 AM »
I have a 6.8 on a old style Contender 23" barrel. The barrel is a great shooter , I bought as a deer barrel for my nephew to use but we did not get to test it :'( I was also thinking of useing it myself and did carry it some but when my shot came ( we have some bonus doe areas but we are a one deer state) I was carrying my 30-06. I have a climbing stand and am thinking about a 6.8 SPC pistol barrel ( my contender was a pistol when I bought it) T/C has a 14" 6.8 my Question is how much vel. drop with a 9" shorter barrel? I have a scope chest holster that would be great when walking with a stand on your back, plus it would get me back into handgun hunting!

If I recall the newest Hornady loading manual #7 lists loads developed in a shorter carbine length barrels. It may not be exactly what you are looking for but it will give you any idea of fps.

I dont believe that the vol.difference would be all that much. The most important thing is how well you can shoot a pistel
at the farthist distance that you would expect to shoot. If you can put them in the boiler room it should be more than enough.Thouse chest holsters are the trick for keeping your hands free, and, when you need to get the gun out you dont have any trouble to do so.If you decide to go with the pistol, let us know how it shoots for you.pan.

Thanks SKB and Pan I think I will pick one up in spring, now I wish I had kept my LER 4X VXII . I got rid of it with all my pistol barrels a few years ago. I will keep all posted as I devlope loads and powder preferances when the time comes. I posted my range results when I shot my 6.8 carbine ( it is a keeper! ) Thanks

I've got a 6.8 barrel on the way for my contender pistol.
I shoot an AR15 in 6.8 and love it.

Main Woods,i shot a doe this past year with my rifle. It was very windy 35 40 mph wind gussts and, she was 167yds out.
[lazord].I put the cross hairs just on the edge of her chest, she was slitley quarting to me,faceing to my right, wind blowing from rite to left. The bullet hit one lung and did a job on about half the liver, and just nicking the paunch and going all the way through!.The edge of the woods was about 50 or so from her.At the shot she did a half circle and did a fast walk to the edge of the woods. Her back was to me so i didnt want to shoot again. She looked around for a few min.and then just laid down.I watched for maby 10 min.,and she didnt move. it was a pretty good size doe maby 160 or more,a LOT of FAT.
I was kina suprised that the bullet drifted as much as it did.But then who knows how much wind the bullet encounterd on it way.Holding to the side of the chest i was sure the bullet would hit pretty much in the lungs. That was the first one i have ever hit the paunch and i hope that the hunting gods will not have me shoot another like that, what a mess!!!.
I just thought you would like to know how the cal. preformed for me.pan.

Hey pan thanks for the report IMR web site list Rem 9 1/2 primer. Pan I have been shooting the Silver State ammo serria pro hunter / and also Barnes TSX . I have shot quite a few critters with the TSX and I think it is the best hunting bullet availble today. ( MHO ) whatever you where useing sounds like it worked fine. Hi Gary is the barrel you are waiting on a 14" ? will that have sights ? are sights an option? I will scope mine but if a barrel did have sights I might use Leup. quick release rings and pop the scope off on a rain day.

Maine,i was using the Hornady BTHP factory.I believe its a target round.I was just out trying for yotes and wasnt looking for deer, but,i had a doe tag, and you know the rest.I know that ita realy not a deer round, but,!.Thanks for the heads up on the primers, bud.

Gary,i think youll be happy with your set up,good idea!.I havnt used an Aim point, but,i have used Red Dots .I have one on my shotgun for turkeys, one on a 10-22,and one on my wifes 243.My wife has a hard time lineing up a scope so i tried the Redot and shes very happy. All of the Reddots are the cheap Wally World ones $35.00 or so,and they work well,no troubles, and iv had them on for a few years now.pan.

Hey Gary that sounds like a nice set up. Pan 6.8 SPC.com has some good load info and a guy Zak ( Smith I think) has some good loading notes. I went to IMR and Hodgdon web site. I will also Email Barnes for load info. I do hope to neck size only, I will have to see if the 2 barrels have the same chamber dimensions but if they dont I will use diffrent brands of brass one for pistol one for rifle. I will use the Serria 110 pro hunter and the Barnes 110 TSX for whitetails the two powders I will try first are IMR 4198 and H 322. I have not loaded for the 6.8 yet but will soon and I will keep you posted as to my results.

H322 seems to be the powder for the 6.8 so far,my AR15 shoots the sierra 110gr prohunter and 90gr varmenter bullets the best.
My contender barrel will be here wed.

Panman the hornady brass i got had crimped primers so i had to remove the crimp before seating new primer.
Got the 14" 6.8 barrel last night put it together and ran out to the range 3 differt loads shot right at 3" at groups at 100yds this was with an aimpoint sight with a good wind blowing ran over to the silhouette range and had no trouble hitting all targets at all ranges 50-200YRDS.
I think i'm going to like this gun.

Wow Gary that sounds like fun. I was thinking of a scope (4X or maybe a T/C 2.5 X 7 lighted ret.) but I do have a tasco pro point doing nothing. I have never used it , it came on a used barrel I bought and never shot ( 7mm TCU hunter) I think I will try it on my 6.8 pistol barrel when I get mine. Thanks for the report and the Good Idea !
