Author Topic: Wife says no to new gun. So I'm thinking of a 243 varmint (Read 2448 times)

I have one of most calibers I have a 22-250, a 223 and a Hornet, all heavy barrels I dont want anymore big game guns but i do want a long range shooter for coyotes, chucks etc. what would you guys recommend for a good different caliber. I'm kind of thinking about the Rem 700 Varmint.

Since you have the .22 calibers well covered and are restricting yourself to the 700 Varmint variants - why not try a .243 or 6mm Remington? These offer slightly better long range performance than the big .22s and can handle larger game if needed. Both are highly accurate cartridges in the M700, with a slight ballistic edge to the 6mm. I've owned both and liked them a lot.

my dad owned a boat business when I was growing up and a good friend of his said his wife told him if he bought another boat she was leaving him.. (he was an avid fisherman, lived to be on the water), well, he bought 2!

that's a true story...

she left him...
he got another wife who loved fishing as much as he did!

A 243 is a great choice, check around and see if you can get a barrel faster than 1:10. Most 6mm shooters shoot the 55+ gr bullets. I think that the higher end hold better performance. I have a 1:10 barrel and above 85 gr the pattern opens up.

If you reload, a 6 BR or 6x250 with a fast twist. Even the 6 PPC can be accurate out to 500 yds.

Get a CZ in 243!! Load 55gr for coyotes and varmints, 100 gr for deer. It has a set trigger like Sako but costs a fraction. I prefer small bores too, got a 204, a few 223's and the 243 is the perfect addition! CZ550 American in 243, you'll love it!!

As others have said;

A .243 is a great choice, I've got 2 and feel that is all the rifle I need for large game or varmits.
A Savage model 12 is a fine choice and will not break your wallet.
My Model 12 in .243 is an accurate of a rifle as I could ever want. 70 grain Ballistic Tips and Varget are a Varmit Shooters Dream.
You won't go wrong with a 24 Cal.

How about another .22? My long range goto gun is a .22-6mm. I`m pushing an 80 gr. .22 cal. bullet over 3,500 fps. Wind drift at 500 yrds. in a 10 mph cross wind is just 15 in. Forming brass is a snap, just run it through a FL sizer for .22-6mm like it was already formed. Nothing wrong with a .243 though if your looking for a lite weight gun. I also have 1 of them in a Savage Striker. Hech of a hand cannon.

Have a 6mm loaded with 95gr BT. That's my long range yote gun.
the 25-06 would be another great choice, very versital.

I have a 70's era Rem Varmint Spec. in 25/06 and an old 722 in .244. Both make neat varminters. I use both 55gr and 85gr in the .244. The 25/06 seems to like 100grs.

when my wife says NO, I listen now,
The last time I didn't, we ended up with $800.00
in over drafts the next month from bounced checks...
That was last October and we still have not recovered.
Credit Bureau folks are no fun to deal with..

It was a Winchester model 70 in .270 WSM.
and a Ruger Vaquero Birdhead in .45 colt.

Almost had to sell them though the next month to pay the Bills.
Squeaked By and cooked a lot of CHEAP dinners for a few months.
My vanity almost cost me and my wife everything.. And in all honesty
I still fell like an A$$.. I make pretty good money as God has blessed me
with a good job but I was very unwise in the way I spent it. I also did
not want my wife to have to work and she wasn't at the time this happened.
She has had to get a job to bail us out and that even irritates me more at myself.
Once you are behind, it is a pain to get caught back up !
(she has told me that she was going stir crazy at the house though)
I doubt I will buy any more guns for quite some time because of this.
My perspective has been totally changed as to what is really important to me.
My wife had not told me that we were low on funds. She said I worked hard and she wanted me to have nice things if I wanted them. she is a great little lady !
What really slapped me in the face was that during this
period of time, My Aunt passed Away. I did not even have enough money to
buy a suit to be a Pall-Bearer... No gun on earth is worth a feeling like that again !

I don't have to ask my wife about anything financial, You see this is our second time around. We have agreed that we split the "Bills" and responsibilities and whats left is our own. This is the secret to a successful marriage. I dont buy her kids shoes, and she doesn't pay my child support. If I want another rifle, and I have the money, cash, ( I no longer believe in credit cards), then I get it. This also applies to fishing and hunting trips, but normally she joins me. She's actually a better target shooter than me, but I've read that women have better fine motor control and make better "markspersons", ah, riflewomen, er ah, SNIPERS.........
