Just Starting Yote Calling
« on: January 30, 2007, 06:19:44 PM »
I want to get started in Yote calling. Is it a science which takes hours of practice with a practice e-caller? Is there a CD/Video recommended for tutoring? Which calls are best to start with? I have read of sqeakers being used from simple items such as rubber ducks for close clients. I have read people swearing by Circe calls which run about $14 each. How about howlers? I have seen Coyote hunting on OLN in the past which hunters seem to have about 5 or more calls around their neck. Ummm $15 X 5 seems kind of expensive. I am an Electrical Engineer very capable of using my daughter's Ipod or CD player and building an e-caller from Radio-Snack for about the same cost, but I would like the sportsmanship and self  gratification of doing it the old fashion way. Which callers are suggested to get started? Do you need 5 or more different calls around your neck? Is there a science to get these dogs comming in? I experimented once with a mouth turkey yelper squeeling torward the end of a deer hunting session. I didn't feel confident in the sounds and felt like I was only scaring away possible deer opportunities.
In the past I always shot my dogs either by accident while deer hunting or by locating the dogs and stalking the sections. I have taken all my past yotes with a shotgun slug or 00 Buck. I would like to use my .223 for calling in the dogs. If I can't get them in close enough while learning maybe I will take my 25-06 to start until I know I can bring them to within 200yds.

32 point buck.

The short answer is NO you do not need a string of calls around your neck, You can use one call to do it all. There are many calls you can use BUT, the one you choose will do just fine. Its like a lot of things big boys do, They try one then they hear about this old boy killing Humpteen coyotes using a certain call so he beats it to town and gets this super duper call that gets all the coyotes in the country to come in in flocks and then he tell all his friends about this super duper call and all his friends all go to town and get this super duper call, this goes on until he has a shoe box full of calls, All you need to do is buy one of the best name calls and learn how to use it. Most of the calls i use are home made by me. I am sure you have seen in one of the predator Magazines some of the name brand calls. There will be a bunch of fellers here that will tell you which is their fovorite super duper call and all of them will work for you once you learn how to blow them. I am sure you can get this information on line, Never been there my self but i hear some of the fellers talking about it. I hope this information helps you sir........Joe........

Though we use an e-caller a lot, I prefer mouth calls. I just received an order from Crit'R*Call and I really like what I have seen so far. Their website is below and go to all of their pages for info. Go to the the following websites for more info ....

Good day gentleman. 32 the call that seems to do best for me is a circe 3 in 1. it has a cootontail/jackrabbit/squeaker reeds all in one housing. cuts down on carrying multiple calls to me. Like oso45-70 said you find what works for you and run w/ it. Be careful tho cause once you get the fever it doesn't go away. Good luck and take care.......Bill

This is a great age for a new caller just because of all the avalible instructional video & audio that is avalible. Even if you don’t purchase any of these, you still have the Internet capability of  listening to MP3’s to give you an idea of what you need to sound like.

You will find that there can be quite a difference in the pitch of the call. A standard Cottontail can sound high & clean with some brands while being more raspy with others. Some are adjustable for the whole range by sliding the reed retaining clip up & down such as in a Burnham model that I own, or even changing the entire reed like a Knight & Hale or some other models would have you do. I do have a couple of the 3 in 1 calls and They can work very well.

You really cant go wrong but will have to learn what pitch works the best for the Coyotes in your local. One thing that I will empathise is to power up your call with your air sorce coming from your diaphram, not your mouth. This is a very powerful air sorce that will let you call as loudly or softly as you wish along with being able to add or remove quaver to the note. Plenty of practice is encouraged and you might be able to practice on your local Cats & Dogs depending on your neighboors & location of course. This will give you the chance to work on your volume while duplicating the same sequence. Don’t be scared to use your off hand to cup & squelch the volume as nessary.

Also remember to play the part of an injured animal or an animal in distress. This varies as you can tell by listening to different MP3 versions but the important part is to put some feeling into it.

Hope I didn’t over complicate things. You really can get by with just one call but I will Usually have at least three on me in case of reed freeze down or such. I would say to buy one and use it. Also you might revisit what you were doing with the Turkey diaphram call…Some of the guys would pop it in their mouth then practice saying why..whyy..whyyy for predators instead of pronouncing Chick to get your basic cluck. My own diaphram is an HS Strutt dble kee-kee which replicates a young turkey in distress. I start with a few clucks, but then get it moving to high and fast yelps. I have also used that little disk shaped Mr Squirrel call for Fox & Coyote. You can enhance this by shaking a small sapling via foot pressure while calling. Then we get into the Howlers but that’s another story. The important thing is that changing up on calls will keep one from burning out an area or educating Predators to the same dying rabbit sound.

Sorry for the long wind but this sport really does cause a fever that wont go away like GDOLBY said. I see that BIGJEEP man has some great links posted And that
OSO45-70 has pegged the reasoning well on why some of those boys have multiple calls.
That one call purchased can be very versitile like NONYA said and will call in every predator bird or animal out there. Just watch out for those Great Horned Owls. ;D

Oso's got it nailed.  Get one or 2 good calls and learn how to use them.  Learn how to do a good lip squeak and leave the plastic squeaker inside the dog toy.  Less equipment to fumble around with means less movement and noise which will increase your chances by a huge margin.
