Resizing brass for pumps and auto loaders.
« on: January 03, 2007, 11:05:16 AM »
I posted yesterday on Jan. 3 about using a .45acp carbide die to squeeze down the case base of a 30-06 or .308 based case. I found my new Hornady .45 resizing die will work with .243 brass and not 30-06 or .308 brass. I am going to modify my die so it will work. I apologize if anyone tried doing this and ruining their brass. My RCBS .45 carbide die does work with 7mm-08 brass. If you do try using a .45 resizing die remember to remove the decapping stem. Dave

Maybe but the .45 carbide die resizes the cartridge base only. The guy that told me about using the .45 die neck sizes only. I had a Hornady .45 carbide die bored out in the top end so a 30-06 will go all the way in even loaded. The carbide ring won't do anything for new brass. I already had a 7mm-08 FL die set. With the 760 30-06 I had and now the 7600 7-08 I have I have to run my loads through the chamber once before hunting with them as they are hard to eject the first time. I told my friend about it and he suggested trying the .45 die first. He said rifle dies don't resize the case as close to the base as the pistol die. A small base die for a 7-08 is a cutom order die from RCBS. When he told me about the .45 die trick he didn't realize his older .45 was deeper than dies are now. I can't use the decapping rod in my Hornady die now. I've run my 30-06, .243, & 7-08 ammo through it and the 30-06 caes needed it the most. I can tell a real difference after running the 30-06 loads through it. It has helped my 7-08 & .243 ammo too. I guess it depends on the rifle and how many times the cases have been used.

Dave in WV,
I agree with Slamfire.  It's a pump & autoloader!!!  It's a hunting gun not a benchrest gun. Your asking for problems.
BE CAREFUL!!!  ??? ??? ???

OLDHandgunner , I don't neck size my brass for my pump.  I agree it's not a benchrest rifle. I don't intend it to be. I full length resize it but it's a little tight. The .45 die does the trick for me. New brass will drop into the die to the extractor groove so I'm not resizing fired brass too much. What I posted about is an alternative to a small base die. My son uses a small base die for his 760 30-06. He got the rifle from me. I used a regular Lee FL die for years. I have a M70 30-06 now. Of the different cases I ran through the .45 die, my 30-06 cases benifited most. My bolt closes easier now. My load for my 30-06 is mild as is my 7-08 load. What I have does the same work of a small base die on the base area of the case only and I can use it on any .308 or 30-06 based cartridge.

I guess I misunderstood what you wrote, thought all you were doing was sizing the base with the 45 die. Never heard of this before, but I'm always open to a new ideas. My son also has to use a RCBS small base die for one of the guns he reloads for. I've never had a problem with my RCBS dies for my pumps. ( Lucky I guess ) It's whatever works for you.  GOOD LUCK!!!

No thanks, I've come full circle and am into single shots. I'm using the kind you load from the front, that smoke must be addictive.  ;D
