barrel fitting ????

I just got my new 25-06 barrel and am in the process of fitting it. To start it had a large gap at the top. As per the FAQ's I checked the barrel face first and then worked on the lug pivot. The latch shelf had a rough lip at the edge which I smoothed up. The gun  now locks up tight with  no play at all. My question is that the release lever doesn't come up quite as high as it does with my factory barrel. It seems to be working fine, it just doesn't sit up as much. Is this anyhing to be concerned with or should I shoot and see?

This is probably a silly question. After I "smoke" the latch shelf (gonna have to run out, not a candle in the house), do you file the flat of the shelf or the point of the shelf?

On the surface that the latch engages that you smoked, it doesn't take much, I would recommend a stone over a file, if you take too much off, it won't lock up tight. You'll see where the latch stops on the shelf surface, about half the shelf depth or slightly less is good, if you go too far, it will wear as you use it and eventually it will be loose, so less is better.
