Over the winter I traded my win 70 blk shadow for a 70 stainless w/ the boss both 06.  I set up some rounds w 180 hornady SSTs for it starting at the max load and working backwards in .5 grain increments to the 1 grain above the starting load w hogdon 4895 5 rounds each total of 45 rounds.  I got to the range set everything up, took out some factory stuff to check my scope shot two rounds about 1.5".  Let everything cool down, snaked the bore, talked to my buddy and settled in for what was suposed to be a fine saturday of shooting, figured I would find a good load here somewhere.  Loaded up the lightest round 54.5 grains and let her rip.  Two and a half inches high, but thats ok I can fix that with the scope.  Loaded the second round and deep breath let her fly.  Looked and the holes are touching (hmm).  Round three, did I miss the paper? Stopped and waited for my buddy to finish.  Snaked the bore, ok he's done, walked down and looked at the target, CRAP!! three holes .45", now what the hell do I do with all these other rounds I loaded!!!! My buddy luckily enough wanted to try my rifle so I guess I had some rounds for him to try.

Next time I need to figure out where to start so my groups close up some :)

This is the handloader's nightmare because it effectively ends the search for a good load.  Sell the gun and replace it with a piece of junk that you think you might be able to turn into a 1 MOA gun through your handloading endeavors, then spend $2,500 on every conceiveable bullet, powder, primer, and brass combination to make in your search for that one special load.

That's why I love the .30-06 (see my website) so much... They just shoot such a wide range of bullets, weights, and powders so easily... Oh sure, there are loads that ANY rifle will spit out and not like all that well, but the .30-06 sure is hard to beat. I'll bet you a dinner at Outback Steakhouse that the others will shoot just about as well too...  :D

Buy a Hornady Camlock bullet puller and break down the cartridges.  But first, load some more of the good  load, and make sure your good group wasn't a fluke.

I should have such problems!!!!!
I would try at least 3-5 rounds of each load before deciding on the best.  Then pull the others with the kinetic bullet puller, and use the powder and bullets over.

Hmmm. sounds like fun to me.  I would change targets, take a picture of the group (and post it here)  and then shoot the rest of em to see how they group.  Gee, I am just getting into reloading and this is mighty exciting :)
