You are right that they will be getting hungry and that is greatly to your advantage as they need to eat more just to stay alive. Even a sparrow will eat up to five times more under these conditions as it has to to keep from freezing solid.
I have been out to many times to count in the blizzard like conditions. I could usually find tracks along the smaller woods sheltered tributes that feed the larger drainages.
Brushy fence lines, hedge rows, and multiflower rose or briar patches can also be good.
