30 T/C by Hornady
« on: January 25, 2007, 07:39:39 AM »
Even though this is designed for the new TC Icon, I figure this can be discussed here as it is a new cartridge and we cover them here.
Plus I would love to know more about it and if it's possibile in a Handi. I am guessing it would be, but I am not sure at what pressures it is running.
So far I have only read about it here and it's not much to run on...

SO what are you guys thoughts?

Their use of proprietary powders allow them to get max performance that the handloader can't do, so if the pressure is within Handi capabilities, factory ammo would be the only choice.

As far as 3000fps 150gr loads, the Federal Fusion does well over 3000fps in my SS.30-06 Handi, so there's no gain there for a Handi, the short action bolt rifle would benefit tho.

It's a real good cartridge in the Icon...and would be nice in a Handi...however...since Hornady is using a proprietary mix of powder...one we will never be able to get out hands on..I don't know how good it truly will be...Secondly...until Marlin gets their act together and holds the specs down with the 308 barrels...how good it will shoot... using not only factory load..but with what many of use will do with standard reloads is questionable.........

The 30 TC was designed for serious target shooting...by serious bench shooter...and has it all for them....Our Handi rifles aren't quite up to those standards...and don't have...and probably never have the 5R rifling that was used in it's creation...let alone the quality barrel steel that was used and the strength of it's reciever...Marlin/NEF would have to make some serious adjustments to their way of doing things for this cartridge to really shine in a Handi...It's possible...but not very probable..that we will ever get the chance to find out...I would like to see it happen though...perhaps another to add to the wish list...?

Thats what I was thinking about as well. The mix they use in their light Mag ammo is awesome, and vamps up the velocity of all the ammo offered in this line.  I would like to see the deminsions of the case, I am guessing it's a tad bit wider than the 308, and a bit shorter ??? I guess I will just have to wait and see till more info is released.
I see your point about what would be the benefit, if the handloader couldn't reach such claims, over the old 308 or 30-06 sense we have no need for short or long action devisions in a Handi platform.

Same thing goes for the Hornady 204 ammo. They are using proprietary propellants. Does anyone have a handle on just what these 'new generation' powders are. Are they blends of existing powders or what? ??? ??? ???
