Mohunter06 and others
« on: January 23, 2007, 03:56:16 PM »
Just wanted to give a heads up concerning a new lot # for H4895 powder.   This new canister of powder is waaaaaay hotter than any of it I have used in the past and pushed my Handi-rifle to near destruction using a load I have used for quite a while with no negative results before and also passed on to other reloaders for 22/250.

I have read that upon opening a new canister of powder one should start it with a reduced load to see if the burn rate is similar to what they have been using, but I have never had an experience like this in all my years of reloading.  From now on I think I will only buy 8lb jugs of rifle powder and start over on load developement each time I break into a new one.

Have you talked to or e-mailed Hodgdon about this? I'm sure they would like to know about it. Powder companies have been known to goof up.

I have done this for years with WC846, W748, H414, and WC872. If I buy a brick of primers I like, I go and buy a couple more. Haven't had to redo my load densities for many years....

Smokinjoe5150 made a great suggestion you SHOULD and MUST carrry through on notifying the company, for the good of every reloader everywhere, PLEASE contact Hodgden and let them know your expierence and the lot number of the powder. You could save someone from some serious injury or you can sit back and contribute to it. You have a responsibility here, please make good on it!!!....<><.... :o

I talked to Hodgdon this AM. They've received no reports of problems with any lot of H4895.

Lucky,

You didn't use IMR 4895 data with H4895 powder, did you? The max load for the IMR 4895 is higher than for H4895.
