Cuts in patches.....

Last time i cleaned my Renegade .54 cal I noticed the patches were coming out with slits in them. So...I used some Butches Bore Shine non-embedding bore polish to try to smooth things out. Unfortunately Im still gettin slits in my patches. Is it possible to polish the bore too much if I go at it with the Bore Shine again? Any info will be helpful. :?

The gun was used when I got it....the barrel was a little rough inside but just needed a good cleanin. Found out my patches were too thin (.010) and gonna go to a .015 or .018 patch on the next go around. Ive only had one range session with it which consisted of 10 shots at 50 yards to get an idea of accuracy. All shots except for two went into a 1 1/2" group so the accuracy so far is pleasin to me.
 My loads consisted of a .530 Roundball, .010 spit lubed patch, and 90 grains of FFg Goex black powder. Recovered patches had a hole burnt plum through em. Gonna try cuttin powder down to 80 grains and go with a .015-.018 patch lubed with somethin other than spit and see if I can cure the burnt patches and hopefully tighten up the groups some. I have a feelin this is gonna be a really good 100 yard gun. The gun is a T/C .54 Renegade by the way.

   Get back out and do some more shooting, that gun just isn't broken in yet!  If after, say, 300-400 rounds you are still getting cut patches, you can take a wood dowel and wrap some 0000 steel wool(a little oil doesn't hurt either) around it and run that through the bore a few times.  I do that on new barrels sometimes to break the sharpness on the rifling.

Howdy Flatlander,    I shoot the same T/C .54 Renegade and my "cherry" load for 50 yds is only 45 gr 2F goex.  This the same load for 25 yds and I use point of aim for both targets. I use 85 gr 2F for 100 yards and don't have to move my sights at all with this load. Same point of aim  dead center. For patch, I use 0.22 matress ticking I soak and squeeze of excess hot bore butter and a .53 ball. Keep shooting and ENJOY. :D

All of the above will get you there.  Be patient, do lot's of intiial shooting and do it with thick ticking.  See, "readin patches"

TC Renagade .54 shoots 2" at 50 yds using 80 g. 2F. Ball is .535. Patch is .015. Every patch has a hole (Cut?). Can't get rid of problem. I came to my senses one day when I realized shooting 2" at 50 yards is not really a problem. Dead deer do not know that patch is torn. I'm not tellin'.

One more thing you could try is to add a bit of cornmeal on top of your powder between powder and patched ball. This will act as a buffer to keep the heat off your patch and most likely will not burn through a patch. If it's a cut patch, you have a rough spot in the bore and the best way to cure that is to shoot it. It will take awhile but it will wear off.

Flatlander:  Try these easy things. As you know , to get accuracy the patch needs to remain uncut. Dark spot in the center, frayed edges but no holes or cuts. A tiny hole on the side can double the size of your group. Start at the easiest. Go to a store that sells material. Only consider 100% cotton. The " pillow ticking with the stripe" is often around  15. Take a piece of this material about 12" square. Lube and start your ball. Instead of cutting the patch off, using the material for a handle pull the started ball back out of the bore. Hold the spot where the ball was up to the light. Bet you see a cut or hole. If so try another candidate of thickness until you find one that stays whole. Finding this right patch combo will be night and day to your groups.  I am sure you have already checked the crown for burrs that would be cutting the patch. You can load a hunk of wasp nest down on top of the powder  prior to the ball if you are using a thin patch and having problems with burning thru. Just a little work will cut the group you are getting in half.   Keep shooting
