New Mark II Gv't Competition 678 slab side

Just picked one up yesterday at Olde English Gun store.  They bought the last inventory from a distributor and ran them on sale for 349.99.  I know they could be had cheaper used but this is new and they aren't making them anymore.  I thought I'd better get one since they are brand new.  I had a 10" Bull barrel Mk II that I sold/traded 15 years ago - I'm still kicking myself on that one.  Most accurate shooting 22 pistol I've ever shot.   I hope this Mk II Gv't cometition model will be accurate too.

I also have one of the MarkII Slabsides, and would like to get a chance to shoot it. Rec'd it from a dealer back East. He also had bought up a number of them and I got his last NIB Slabside.

However, I took it in for a trigger job shortly after it arrived.

Just rec'd a 2X Leupold back from their service department this past week.

Sent the scope in to have the paralax set to 25yds.

So it will be interested to get it on paper after I pick it up about the 1st of May.

Also have a Clark Custom 77/22 which is needing a bunch of test ammo put through it. Maybe I can get them both going at the same time.

Well, I rec'd the Slabside Mark II back from the smith this last wed. and had the scope mounted and ready for it's first trip out this last Friday.

The gunsmith did a nice job, and the Slabside functioned great.

My goal for this gun/scope combination was to come up with a "minute of grouse head" shooter, so I had the factory set the 2X Leupold to a 25yd. paralax distance.

Therefore, that is the distance at which I shot during this first session.

The wind was hard and gusty, and I am looking forward to a nicer day to redo some of the tests.

However, the package is showing great potential and without a doubt will greatly exceed the "minute of grouse head" minimum I had hoped for.

Remember the hard/gusty wind during the shoot. The distance - 25yds. and all groups were 10 shots.

Rem/Eley EPS went two groups of 9/16", Wolf Match Target gave a group 5/8"V. buy 3/8"H., Rem/Eley Match Xtra Plus did 13/16", Fed. Gold Metal Ultra Match gave 3/4", CCI Mini-Mag. HP went 1", CCi Green Tag gave    1 1/16", while some other loads open up a bit more.

As harvesting grouse in the fall will not cause a great amount of ammo to be expended, and because one shot through the head will be more then enough to do the job, I have no problem with using costly standard vel/target ammo for the process.

Also wanted to change the Zero distance on my Clark Custom 77/22 and help the land owner with a few ground critters.  Wow, the 75yd. distance really allowed the wind to open things up.

Anyway, very pleased with my new Ruger Mark II Slabside as it is everything I had hoped it would be!

I like my Ruger mkII slab side, the only problem I have is, I am left handed the safty on them is definatly right handed, has anyone heard of any kind of a left hand safty for them?

gee we did the same thing! i had a 10" MKII around 1986 which i thought would help me shoot my 10" super blackhawk, i was wrong and later sold the blackhawk to a hunter buddy of mine and later sold the 10" MKII. i think you did pretty good for a new MKII slab side. here in Maryland with the internal trigger lock and spent shell caseing laws i had to settle on a used one. i found a govt model MKII for $280 but thats used. there great!! i started bullseye shooting with mine, put some Herrett's national match adjustable grips on, and next is some more internal stuff. i wish mine was a little newer model with the drilled and tapped receiver for a scope mount. the ruger sights are really sub pair for bullseye. but they have some others on the ruger sight i am going to try next.

I got a slab side comp model also and since I'm a leftie I haven't shot it much due to the thumb rest grip panel.
To the best of my knowledge there's no leftie safety available.
Mine needs the grips changed out on it I guess since it just sits around now the way it is.
It has an Aimpoint stuck on it now.

I really think you could get a set of lefty grips from Herritt or one of the other grip makes, Or you could get a seandard set of Mark II grips which do not have the thumb rest.

I love my slabside. It's a great gun to shoot and unbelievably accurate.

Have you had the chance to do bench work with a scope and good ammo or??

I have had mine for 10 months or so, and I took it to be smoothed up right off, so that ate up 2 - 3 months, then I have been in a sling - 2 shoulder surgerys - for 3 - 4 months, which means I have not done the testing I had hoped for.  Then for the past year we have been in a "moving" situation, so all in all I have not been on the bench for quality time to any great amount.

What little testing I did, while out of a sling, looked very good. However, I tried some bench testing during this sling period and found I am  not as steady as needed with one hand and twisted around to make way for the arm.

Hope to be out of the sling this week, but if the doctor allows, I need to put some meat on the pole and then we have winter.

Maybe next year.

Gotta love the slab side... Just about immediately after buying the gun brand new, the side of the slab bagan to slightly rust..  That's my only complaint.  Never wasted the time to call Ruger or anything.  "VQ make the Volthanes in LH I believe" -- Yep, they do.  I've got the Volthanes on mine and they are extremely comfortable.

I really use my Ruger stainless handguns and never see a sign of rust even though I seldom give them the TLC I would a Blued unit.

I'm left handed and put a pair of hogue grips on mine ruger makes left hand grips for your slab side but i wanted grips that my right handed buddys could shoot.
With a 2x scope on mine it is death to all squrriels out to 50yrds.

I was in Olde English last week on my way home from Cincy. Lots to look at and some decent prices.
I also had a 10"MK2 and sold it in the late 80's. Last year I found another (blued) like new at a price I could not refuse even though I wanted stainless this time.

I found one of the MK II Competitions and took it to the range last week. It was cold and windy, but the gun shot fine. Trigger was good but a little heavy. I got an extended bolt release from Brownell's and ordered a V sear and extended mag release. I will see how those help things before I consider anything else.

I got a set of Ruger leftie grips for my Mk2 Comp with the thumb rest. Pretty nice and they look like they came on it.
