Big Conicals
« on: January 21, 2007, 02:58:09 AM »
I shoot a Remington 700 MLS in .54 cal.  I use is a Parker Production 505 grain conicals and while the cost for using these hunting is not great, shooting at the range is very expensive. This is an excellent hunting bullet with 120 grains of black FFG. I am looking to cast my own but I am having trouble finding a mould with the same characteristics as the big Hydra-Con. I also want to size and lube the conical. I have a Lyman 450 sizer but finding the necessary punches and die (I need a .549 die) has proved hopeless. I cast for several handgun calibers so I have most of the equipment I need. This is important also because most of the good .54 cal bullets are becoming very hard to find. I should point out I am 55 years old and followed Elmer Keith all my life. This is why I do not want to shoot them new fangled trick bullets with bells and whistles on them. There is NO replacement for displacement!

Take a look at www.prbullets and look for thier conicals, there in there. Not a solution but a very viable option if you like big lead.

The web site is www.prbullet.com ,not bullet"s". Looks like they cost about 75cents a piece when bought in bulk.

Josie ---

Check out mountain molds web site - you can online order with your own design - I have one for my 54 cal muzzleloader. Dan recommends you use steel blocks for casting with pure lead instead of alum. --- I have several of the cheaper alum. --  and have yet to have one warp due to higher casting temperature. Excellant quality and they won't break your bank acct. You can spec your own diameter and if it were me I would try a diameter that you could paper patch -- no leading issues and generally much more accurate. You should find out exactly what your bore diameter is before you order. Do a search on this board and you will find more info.
