CVA .32 Cal Squirrel rifle replacent ramrod needed
« on: January 19, 2007, 01:16:50 PM »
Can anyone lead me to where I may be able to purchase a replacement ramrod.  I obtained a used rifle minus the ramrod.  I have tried looking for one but NO luck so far!

Thanks

If it's a wooden ramrod you want, go to a hardware store and buy a hickory or ramin wood hardwood dowel and make your own.  Get a 5/16" dowel for 32 caliber, try and find one thats straight with no grain run-out.  Shouldn't cost more than a buck or two.  Attach a brass threaded ramrod tip and your in buisness, they can be found about anywhere.  I buy mine at Track of the Wolf.  If you have trouble finding a tip I may even have an extra one kicking around here somewhere.  Sand the dowel smooth ( I do a final sanding with 600 grit) and stain it with some leather dye, then a couple coats of varnish or linseed oil.

If you're gonna buy a hickory dowel, might as well get a length of PVC pipe and a couple end caps, cut the pipe just a bit longer than the ramrod needed, glue a cap on one end, fill it with kerosene and soak the dowel for a several months, then put the tips on cross drilled, pinned and epoxied. ;)

A synthetic rod can be purchased from any of the blackpowder supply houses.

The original ram rod for the CVA squirrel gun was aluminum, with threaded ends for the jag and accessories.

If you are handy, it is easy to make one with brass or aluminum, or even stainless.  You'll need to measure the ram rod thimbles for size and get a piece of brass, aluminum or stainless stock.   Chuck it in a drill and use a file to take 3/8's of the end down to 1/4 inch.  Tap it for 1/4 inch threads and then get one of those long brass hex nuts that is us3ed to join two threaded pieces.  Run that onto the threads all the way and then use the drill and the file to take it down and add grooves to be a jag in the bore.  It will have to be about .310 diameter to work.  I have done this for both a CVA and a 32 inline that I picked up.    It takes about  a half hour to make and the material costs about $4.00.
