Recoil pad problem

I ordered a Pachmayr recoil pad from Cabalas.  It was supposed to be a fit for both 1894s and 1895s.  When it got here I took it out of the package and tried it on one gun of each.  On both rifles it was about ¾ inch too short and about ¼ inch too narrow on each side.  It is going back today.  Do you think someone just put the wrong pad in the package or are all these too small?  Does Pachmayr have a recoil pad that fits  these models and what is the model number of it.  If not Pachmayr is there another brand such as Limbsaver that would fit.  Not being particularly handy with tools I don’t want a ‘grind to fit’.

I have a whole drawer full of pre-fit recoil pads.  The only one I have had luck on is the Limbsaver slip-on pad.  It looks to me like you might have ordered the pad for the Guide gun, which is different and for a straight stock.  I just ordered another pad from Pachmyar for the new 336.  I am hoping it fits because the 336, 444, 1895 all are suppose to have the same stock.  I will let you know.  MV out!

Yes that’s what it looks like.  Cabela’s needs to be a little clearer in its shooting catalog.  It reads as it is for 1894s, 1895s and guide gun.  Oh well, I’ll send it back and trade it for one that fits a Savage 30-06 synthetic stock I have.  I have a Shooters Friend pad that works real well but as it is a rather short slip on I am afraid that I will loose it busting through the brush.

I got my recoil pad from Pachmayr and it fits except for a small section on the top edge about 1/16'.  I am going to use a belt sander tonight to make an exact fit.  This is by far the closest fitting recoil pad I have found yet.

From Pachmyar:  01739  336 - NEW  WOOD  CURRENT MODEL

Like I said before, I have a drawer full that do not fit.  MV out!

Well, hold your horses.  You cannot grind the Pachmayr recoil pad.  I did and hit metal ruining the pad.  Now I have one for the trash.  MY next attempt is the Hogue Grind-to-fit and a belt sander when it gets here.  MV out!

I've had good luck with the Simms Limbsaver grind to fit pads.

I’m kind of timid when it comes working on my guns when it comes to anything other than a ‘drop in fit’.  I guess I will wait a while and continue to us my Shooter’s Friend slip on.  My 1894 is brand new and I am itching to put some more rounds through it so I will probably wait until this summer and have a gunsmith put a decent pad on it.  Right now I am waiting for a break in the weather as I have ten different loads of five bullets each and am wanting real bad to get some range time.  I would really like to find a good load using a bunch of Laser Cast 240G bullets I have left over from my .44mag Handi debacle.  Weather forecast for the next couple of days: Snow, sleet & cold, locust, frogs, etc. ::)  Bummer!

I bought a pre fit Limbsaver for my 1895 Guide Gun and it fit perfectly. Just unscrewed the factory pad and installed the new one. Limbsaver pads are the BEST. They have taken the "bite" out of the .45/70 and also my Ruger M77 in .350 Remington Magnum. Both rifles are now pleasant to shoot.

That's the problem, the Guide guns have a somewhat smaller stock than do the other 1894s and 1895s.  That recoil pad, I need to send mine back today, is about 1/2 inch too short and 1/8 inch too narrow for either of my guns.

I finally got my Hogue Grind to Fit recoil pad.



What I had to do was put the new pad on the rifle.  I used the original top hole and had to drill the bottom hole.  You also have to drill through the pad for the screw holes, because they do not go all the way through. I then etched the outline of the stock onto the pad.

Next I used a belt sander and sanded the pad to the size of the rifle stock.  This was the hardest part.  I found the Hogue recoil pad sanded well with no chipping.  And last, I have to give credit to my brother because he did all the work.  I just watched.  :)  MV out!

EDIT-  For some reason Hogue takes about three days to process your order and about 10 days to get to your shipping address.  Other than that, I love their products.
